Balancing Shape and Volume Drawing

Going over my work from figure drawing class, I find that if I focus too much on 3-Dimensional volumes, I get a result that feels solid, but stiff and blocky. If I focus too much on proportion and gesture, I get something that may have more life to it and a better likeness, but it's a little mushy/rubbery. The challenge is to get the two approaches to work together.
