This was a fun and challenging experiment for me. Similar to doing a frame study from a film to analyze composition and lighting, I call these motion studies. Taking one frame per minute from a 60 second piece of film, I draw rough sketches of each one to create a mini-animatic.
It's almost like reverse storyboarding. It forces me to focus on all of the visual storytelling skills a comic book artist needs, in an extremely compressed time frame - Gesture, composition, proportion, expression, contrast, etc.
I chose my favorite movie of the past year, possibly one of my top five all time, the magnificent EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE directed by The Daniels and staring Michelle Yeoh.
