" I told you I was out there ... tried to tell you that I'm out here on my own ... "
✧ Ailill Mac Aodha ✧
Age - 28
Pronouns - he/they
Height - 6’0”
Race - Aethyreal (Pooka)
✧ Magic ✧
Cast Index.
Wand - Sturdy Ornate Button
With Cast Index, Ailill can access a supernatural inventory of selected items!
To prepare an item for storage in the first place, Ailill must first study the object through orthographic drawing — a ritual they "invented." The more elaborate something is, the more drawings Ailill will need to make, all until they have an adequate understanding with which to illustrate the item 2-dimensionally... and in a way they find satisfactory. Finally, they must associate the studied item with a sequence, turning the button on their cloak (their wand) the way one would a modern dial padlock. Then, Ailill plunges the object into a strong, cast shadow wide enough for it to pass through.
The ritual completed, Ailill can then retrieve and store the item as they wish, with a few caveats:
AILILL MUST REMEMBER THE ITEM'S ASSOCIATED SEQUENCE. If they cannot repeat the correct sequence, they cannot retrieve the item. Luckily, these sequences don't have to be complicated: they only need to be unique (note: if an item breaks or is modified, it will lose its place in Ailill's inventory, its sequence freed and available for something else).
Whatever shadow Ailill uses to access their inventory, the shadow must be wide enough for the object to pass through. The item will not distort or squeeze through, even if it would usually be flexible enough to pass through a smaller opening.
The less defined a shadow's edge is, the more difficult it is to pull something from it. For this reason, Ailill despises cloudy, overcast days. Well, that and they think it's the most boring kind of lighting to paint.
Ailill cannot use encompassing darkness to access their inventory; they can only use cast shadow. Their current "theory" is that it's like a trapdoor: you can't open it if you're standing on it. Or in it, in this case. It's not a perfect or entirely accurate theory, but it's how they choose to wrap their head around it.
Additionally, with a similar method and through long, intense study, Ailill may conjure things made of tangible shadow. Once they've learned the form of an object well enough to draw it, photo-realistically and nigh-perfectly, from imagination, they can conjure shadows of that item which they may then control telekinetically. Currently, they're only able to make a set of hands. These hands disappear if they do not remain within a 15-foot radius of Ailill and have limited dexterity.
Potential Upgrades: heightened range, improved dexterity with shadow items, various new shadow objects (including weapons), free-handed retrieval of items, and more to be negotiated.
✧ Personality ✧
Positive.
Affectionate, caring, creative, obliging, strong-willed.
Neutral.
Ambitious, dramatic, empathetic, flexible, rambunctious.
Negative.
Hypocritical, oblivious, self-centered, sensitive, ungrateful.
Driven by desires to create, experience, and improve, Ailill is an inventive and ambitious youth. His tenacious nature highlights this, as he clings to his dreams with persistence difficult to match. His dramatic, impulsive tendencies may give others the impression he's nothing more than an idealist, but he isn't bereft of sense or tact. He knows when something is beyond his reach, but he works towards his goals regardless... and after years of waiting for his life to begin, he no longer has patience for waiting to start.
However, that which fostered his impatience has also formed a constant, background feeling of dissatisfaction. Nothing is good enough for him: not his family, old friends, or even his art. Ennui entangles and suffocates him, leaving him desperate for things to make him feel alive and informing his decision to be an adventurer, despite every consequence.
Along with wanting to be an adventurer, though, Ailill's search for fulfillment finds an outlet in people-pleasing. He hates seeing others in pain, feeling for those in trouble, but, more so, he longs to be loved and looked after. Since his altruism is inherently motivated by reward, then it can sometimes be selective. Luckily, he has a personal code that keeps him in check most of the time, but it's straightforward, simple... he can't always be relied upon to do the right thing in complex situations.
Nor can he be relied upon to be entirely consistent. Emotionally delicate with a fair bit of pride, Ailill is prone to hypocrisy (and whining). His obliviousness makes it even harder to learn from the problems he may cause with these traits.
But he doesn't want to be malicious... but he doesn't want to think about it either.
✧ History ✧
Born to an average Pooka family amongst a predictable community in the canopies of Jewelia, Ailill lived a comfortable, sheltered, dim childhood. With a stable but small family made up of a mother working as a healer, an often unavailable magician for a father, and an extended family he saw maybe once every half-decade, Ailill's worries growing up were few and far between. As far back as he could remember, there was always food on the table and a roof over his head. His parents even doted on him financially, regularly meeting his youthful whims.
Still, something was off. Distant. With a mother busy caring for the community and a father out until dusk, Ailill ended up to the wayside frequently, commanded to entertain himself quietly or face punishment. With nothing but ink and paper lent to him by his mother at some point, Ailill learned to create the company he sought through story and art, finding solace in worlds of his design.
Through his drawings, Ailill's parents discovered his poor eyesight. It took some extra time to square away, but by the age of ten (he believes), Ailill finally had the glasses he needed; suddenly, the world looked much more interesting than he once thought. More intrigued by the environment around him now, he drew it frequently, but something was lacking again...
It wasn't until a friend from childhood took him out to see the brighter world beyond the canopy, did Ailill realize what he'd been missing. The minimal light back home could never compare to a sky full of stars, but for all the ways he came alive again, so too did his home work to dull him all over.
With nothing but a button to remind him of the world beyond, mundanity hit him like a stone. Unequipped and powerless to work towards any dream of leaving as a teen, Ailill settled for the stories he could get out of others -- former and current travelers who'd seen the world beyond and who he'd help from time-to-time in exchange for tales -- though words alone were never enough.
As the years passed, Ailill succumbed to an anchored life. He gave up on hearing others' stories, retreating to the worlds in his head as he settled for menial jobs and the practice of magic at his uninterested parents' behest. All he had left was his button souvenir-turned-wand and his drawings, many of which were life studies under candlelight (the closest thing to the brightness beyond).
Until one day, a couple years ago, Ailill experienced a breakthrough: he'd finally discovered his attunement! A magician... a proper magician... could perhaps go out to see the world. With some weird storage attunement, Ailill needn't even carry supplies. Everyone insisted he wait, delay, but something had long since snapped in Ailill.
With his sights set on land he'd heard of in stories, a place ripe for adventure, Ailill escaped into the light.

Trivia
He takes very good care of his glasses and cloak, but his other clothes are pretty tattered and messy.
He talks with his hands -- including the shadow ones (figuratively)!
Fidgets with his button or shadow hands when making big decisions.
He loves to braid his hair and does so every morning (after a drawing to start the day). He used to have long hair in the back and once used his shadow hands to braid it, but he had to chop it off not that long ago.
Though he trends towards paints now, he has a soft spot for ink.
