They are. Sonic's just noticing them. Like he said, he's been too distracted to really notice them.

That makes sense. I looked back at some earlier pages and noticed they were that same glowing light blue.

Yeah, they haven't changed. It's just Sonic's been so distracted with arguing with Shadow, that he didn't notice his surroundings very well. That'll happen a lot as the comic progresses.
