Description
Dragon guarding the Golden Fleece. The Golden Fleece was kept by Colchis's king Aeetes in a grove sacred to Ares. It hanged from a sacred oak and it was guarded by a never-sleeping dragon coiled around its trunk. He was enchanted by Medea who helped Jason to recover the Golden Fleece and bring it back to Iolcos.
[The Dragon was one of the monstrous sons of monsters Echidna and Typhon; together they gave birth to some of the most terrible creatures that roamed Ancient Greece and most of the Greek heroes had to face: the Sphynx defeated by Oedipus, the Chimera defeated by Bellerophon, Scylla (six headed monster that together with Charybdis guarded the channel between Sicily and South Italy) Phea (the Crommyonian Sow) defeated by Theseus, Cerberus (the three headed hell hound) the Neamean Lion, the Lernaean Hydra, Ladon (the dragon guarding the Golden Apples of Hesperides), Orthrus (Geryon's two headed dog) and the eagle eating Prometheus's liver all defeated by Heracles.]
A little personal note. After making some research I found no other description except for the fact that it never sleeps. As for its appearance, I decided to make the dragon more serpent like (and maybe Eastern like) than the classic European dragons we are used to. I mostly followed the scenes depicted on greek vases which I believe might be more accurate since they were made in the right time. Other paintings of the XVII/XIX century preferred the winged fire breathing version, but I think that's a more recent belief that comes from northern myths, like it happened with sirens and mermaids. Obviously these are just my thoughts, nothing's certain.

Interesting choice for a more serpentine reptile look for the dragon. Although all things considered back then animals like that were probably used as the basis for a lot of fantasy manuscripts and myths in the same way that most Sci Fi alien designers draw inspiration from deep sea creatures.
Given the length of its body its easy to see why it'd be something to fear given how it steamrolled through Greece, alongside others of its kin.
