Description American Bittersweet covers large areas of Odiorne Point State Park.

Apparently planted by the Army during WWII to provide quick-growing vegetative cover for the gun battery
earthworks at Odiorne and Frost Points.  Yes, it is fast growing - an invasive pain in the neck
nowadays.  A pain for shrubs and trees because as a parasitic vine, it can apparently shut down
sap flow in the plants it wraps itself around, and choke the life out of them.

People gather this for holiday decorations becuause it's pretty and decorative.  Come get some!

Not that I've ever asked them, but I'd guess that even though it's a state park, the park staff would look
elsewhere while you picked it.  (Probably muttering under their breath "wait, that's all you're taking?!

Come on, take some more whydontcha!")

Post-edit January 2021: It turns out that this may all be Oriental Bittersweet, as it has the yellow capsules, whereas

American Bittersweet has orange capsules.
