Description
Star Swirl the Bearded, born Astera Nocturna I, was a powerful Wizard and is widely considered to be one of the most influential conjurers of the pre-classical era. Conceived out of an illegitimate liaison between a low-ranking Princess and a commoner Guard, his Earth-pony status and bastardry in the strict class-dominated society of his time should have destined him to a life of soldiery and obscurity. Nevertheless, his mother defied the scorn and ridicule of her peers and so ensured him an education in the magical arts.Star Swirl is credited with the invention of more than 200 spells and excelled in conjuration and chronomancy. Although vindicated by his rise to prominence and respected by many, he continued to be obsessed by his low-born status throughout his life, often using spells to change his appearance (he was especially fond of making himself look old and bearded) in order to adopt the wizardly image that many expected.
Star Swirl served within the Crystal Queen's inner circle during the centuries of her reign of the Empire and as an advisor for the successive councils that followed. Having grown close to the Princess sisters Celestia and Selena, he accompanied them to Equestria after the fall of the Empire. He devoted the last years of his known life to pursuing an elusive spell that he believed could transform him into an alicorn.

Great job! I love this vision of Star Swirl; I really hope he gets an episode (and not involving Discord, please) His outfit is really detailed and realistic, but what I like the most is without doubt the spectacular shading work. Bravo!Β

Read the description. Plus, you don't need a horn to use magic. Zecora told Twilight that.

I liked your drawing is very creative and beautiful, but there is something that intrigues me, should not be a unicorn?

"When I have fears that I may cease to be
Before my pen has gleanβd my teeming brain,
Before high piled books, in charactβry,
Hold like rich garners the full-ripenβd grain;
When I behold, upon the nightβs starrβd face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And think that I may never live to trace
Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;
And when I feel, fair creature of an hour!
That I shall never look upon thee more,
Never have relish in the faery power
Of unreflecting love! β then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think
Till Love and Fame to nothingness do sink. "

The poster for Twilight's magic school strongly implies that in this version of the MLP world all ponies are capable of magic.

Actually, cannonly speaking, all ponies can do magic. Faust said so in her tumblr, if I remember correctly. Pegasus has magic that control weather and the ability to walk on clouds is part of that. Earth ponies also have nature magic and stuff. Zecora even says so. Unicorns just have more because their horn is close to the brain.

SaryTheWolf In reply to Rocketai [2014-03-16 03:38:09 +0000 UTC]
I figured that all ponies had magic but cannonly usually only unicorns (and alicorns) could do it on demand, the rest was passive. This version of Star Swirl seems to capable of active magic despite not having a horn. Course he could just be an exception but that poster does imply that such exceptions are more common is this version of the MLP world then in the cannon.

That may be it, or Star Swirl probably has a much deeper story than simply "he was an expection to the rule". I mean, just look at that mirror reflection. It doesn't smell right. What if his magic powers was intensified by "something else"?

Fun details with the background, and I'm intrigued by his dark reflection in the mirror and proposed Crystal Empire origins. The combination of the fading rose and the blue coat gives off almost a Beauty & the Beast vibe.
I'm not headcanoning your backstory, but it is one of the more fun Starswirl ideas I've bumped into lately. Do you ever write fanfiction?

It kinda seems to me like the author included an explanation in their description for why they made a creative decision otherwise, involving history remembering him for the form he liked to adopt using illusion spells? While it may not be the most probably explanation, it doesn't directly contradict his canonical appearance, either.

I love the feathering you gave his legs in this.
And maybe it's just me, but that rose with the dropping petals reminds me very much of Beauty and the Beast...a nod and /or foreshadowing his transformation into a monster, perhaps?

Technically, the angle of the hat on the traveling museum poster would not permit standard horn placement, however.
Wait......... Star Swirl was not a unicorn?!!?
