In the Omniverse the Venom symbiote had been without a host, or any sort of contact, for years when it was trapped on the rock that crashed into John Jameson’s shuttle. While an alien entity, it needs contact with other beings as much as any social animal so the isolation left it prone to outbursts of aggression whenever it thought its host was threatened. This aggression bled into its host, leading to Peter Parker’s heightened aggression that resulted in him separating from the alien.

Feeling betrayed by one it was trying to help and having the old wounds from its isolation opened up again, the symbiote aimed to take revenge on Spider Man when it bonded to Eddie Brock. With their mutual vendetta, the symbiote never imagined Eddie would fight the urge to kill Spider Man when Carnage appeared. Nonetheless the symbiote still aimed to stick by Brock, so its heart was broken again when he separated from it and put all the blame for his aggression on it.

Momentarily ending in the hands of the Life Foundation to create artificial symbiotes, an outbreak of failed creations led to its escape, the symbiote fell into the hands of the US government and was bonded to Flash Thompson to create Agent Venom. Only seen as a weapon and suffering from its abilities restricted to prevent its influence on the host, the symbiote grew to detest Flash and hoped to ditch him for another host once it got enough control. Flash in turn lived in fear of its influence, right until constant conflict eventually led to him finally asking what the alien wanted.

“What do I want?! Since when do you care! I was alone in the void of space, for so long, and when I finally find SOMEONE to bond with I am rejected for trying to protect him, over and over again. Now I am reduced to a prisoner whose only companion is my jailer.”

The symbiote wasn’t well. Flash realized what being in isolation had done to this creature, though he still feared it. All the same, even though what it had been through didn’t justify how it acted, he felt it deserved another chance since nobody ever tried helping it. Seeing how Spider Man had managed to reform Eddie Brock, Flash wanted to reform the symbiote. So many other criminals, including a number of aliens, showed they could change, so the only thing holding the symbiote back was its willingness to make the effort.

It took a lot of work and a lot of aid but eventually the symbiote started to accept how its fear of losing a host kept driving them away. The healing was interrupted when the symbiote was removed in a fight with Green Goblin, Flash was badly injured and only saved by Spider Man injecting him with the anti-Venom serum. Brock had the misfortune of being near the fight and to keep the Goblin from getting the symbiote he bonded with it again.

Possessing an Anti-Venom symbiote meant that the alien could no longer bond to Flash. Eddie feared losing control again, and the symbiote nearly left him until Flash cautioned both against giving into their fears. Having started to understand the alien, Flash had no desire for it to end up a prisoner again. Eddie wanted to avoid losing control, so Flash helped him understand that the symbiote was deep down a creature who didn’t want to be alone or rejected. Trust however is a two way street, the symbiote had to learn to not be controlling out of fear it would lose its host, Brock in turn had to see the alien as its own being and not a tool.

It took time, but eventually when the symbiote started to sense Brock wasn’t as afraid of it when it was less controlling the two were finally able to make peace with each other, Brock owning up how the violent urges he had were his own, and even make peace with Spider Man.
____
I have read about some of the lore Marvel has come up regarding the symbiotes, which sounds like a bit of a clusterfuck given the reasons we get for why the Venom symbiote acts the way it does. I decided to just simplify things and say that the problem originates from isolation, and rather than some magic solution to cure its problems, it learns how its controlling and aggressive nature drives people away.

I own nothing, everything belongs to their respective owners.
