Description The Making of The Giving Tree [link]

********THIS IS NOT A DIGITAL MANIPULATION********

Took easily over a year to produce the finished result.
Location was about an hour and a half away from where I live. Made I don't know how many trips down there to hopefully arrive on nights with thick enough fog to capture this. Did have nights with plenty of fog but by the time I had everything setup and model in place it had faded too much to get what I wanted, so in those situations I would continue the concept and think about how to try to take it further. I would like to stress that I do NOT feel that this is the finished result, but rather as finished as it will ever get. The conditions that existed in this place to produce this result have since changed and can not be entirely repeated, at least not in the same spirit of the image. Therefor this is my completed result. I am happy with it, but what I had in mind would have blown your mind, well maybe just my mind, but it would have at some point blown somebodies mind. Would have been infinitesimally better than what it is now.

Especially on that final shot my model (Heath, always my model, haha) had to hold DAMN still. You can tell he moved slightly, but you can only tell much on my 30x40 print that I donated to the place dear to my heart, the camp I work at during the summers, which is where I took this shot.

*sigh* My series always tend to forcefully end by no choice of my own. This is the second series I've had that ended even though I didn't want it to. The other one ended due to about 1.3 billion gallons of water rushing down a mountain/hill side

***SPOILER(ish)***
The light is not the sun or anything. It was an old school lamp post with an old OLD school lightbulb that actually produced the colors you are seeing. PS me NOT! One because I hate photoshop, two there are other programs that are much cheaper that will focus more on the actual tools that I need and use as a photographer instead of a digital manipulator. I only used the burning tool for like 3 seconds on this shot, would have been easier to do in an actual dark room if you ask me, but thats just cause I love real darkrooms very much (yes even though I almost entirely shoot in digital). The fadeout effect of all the other trees and background was no work at all! Physics did that for me! Didn't have to spend hours in photoshop creating this baby, lol, just 10x as much time making sure I got the ACTUAL shot I wanted, think what you want

well guess what?; No-one says that he can't draw from a picture.
You can yak on all ya like but, that doesn't mean your right or,that what u say is true.
You too are more than capable of being wrong here as matter of fact
I know somebody who can settle this arguement immediately.

a good friend of mine.
which by the way is not u!

no one says that he can't draw from a picture? wait, are you now arguing that he looked at MY photo taken like 3 years ago and published a book with the picture of his tree based off of MY photo, but he did it back in the 60's?

And then you argue that I am capable of being wrong here? Of course I am, but I at least am willing to admit that, and to find out if what I thought and believed was right or wrong I actually looked up copyright and trademark law, read the legal definitions, and established my position once again, but this time backed up by full knowledge of the law that pertains to this matter. And then you argue using no bit of fact or evidence. Now please try again.

and did you REALLY just try to hurt my feelings by saying that I wasn't a good friend of yours? Are you really going to try to argue like that? Are we all 8 years old here? Am I supposed to now tell you that my dad can beat your dad up or that other elementary school gibberish? Please, do grow up a little bit more about all of this.

ummm, i'm not arguing to hear myself speak, i'm arguing so that possibly you'll hear logic through all of this and realize that you are wrong and I am in fact standing up for ALL artists rights

I will GLADLY admit I'm wrong and even change the title if you show me some facts here that prove that I in fact violated anybodies rights at all and broke the law even in doing so

MultifacetedMage In reply to gokuyert [2008-03-14 02:11:16 +0000 UTC]

u are most assuredly not standing up for my rights and,
I am a an artist all be it a writer and, digital photographer but, a artist none the less.

Look do whatever it is u fuckin wanna do just you and, your fucked up friends leave me the fuck alone Got IT !!!!!!!

which means u and, your friends can in no uncertain terms stay the fuck away from me!!!!!!
and, do not contact me anymore!!!

please calm down, remember this is only an online thread where people are supposed to trade ideas, comments, and criticism

definitely not just blindly curse at each other

and besides, I'm not commenting with hate (which is obvious from you at this point) on your deviations, or on anything from you for that matter

I'm actually somewhat curious as to what you believe is wrong with this particular photograph.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the image used on the cover of the book "The Giving Tree" is a drawn picture of a small boy in red overalls standing next to a tree, which is bending slightly and dropping an apple into the boy's hands.

The artwork featured here is an original photograph of a young man standing next to a tree which is silhouetted by the brilliant red light of a lamp of some sort.

While I can see some similarities in composition between the two pieces of artwork, this hardly seems enough to justify the claim of copyright infringement. If your claim is based on his use of the same title as Shel Silverstein's book, then I wonder why you do not accuse every prepubescent emo kid who draws a fairy and titles it after a Dashboard Confessional song.

I am simply curious, that is all.

Grow up and shut up, this piece is 100% the artists original work, Like he said he even did a work in progress version, so any rebuttal coming from you is just plain bullshit.

lol, thanks a lot man
Hopefully he realizes that you are just standing up for ALL artists rights, including Silversteins, and he stops thinking we're just being irrational and trying to pick on him

This is gorgeous! I just love the play of light in this one. The deep rich red, yellow rays that seem to be lights to another world. I love the silhouettes, but even more say the way the models face is ever so slightly illuminated. What a beautiful shot!

This is an amazing photo made even better by the fact that it's virtually untouched by digital manipulation. My personal preferences differ from yours when it comes to such things, but I can certainly admire the purity of this, your magnum opis. I realize it's not quite 'there' yet in your eyes, but neither was the Mona Lisa in her creator's.

And thank you for humbly sharing with us the process of the making of such a beautiful work of art. It only adds to the impact of this image. You've earned my utmost approval .

oh i really don't like that saying that you arent supposed to assume anything
i mean we assume that we are going to wake up tomorrow, we assume that tomorrow the dollar will still have worth, and we assume that we will generally get to wherever we are going without crashing into another car, as well as that our best friend wont stab us in the eye with a spork
assumption are wonderful
