Were betrayed by someone they grew close to and became their arch nemesis (Shredder and Tai Lung)
Trained teams of other anthropomorphic animals who would become elite protectors of their homes (the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Furious Five) to cope with their past struggles
