Description
Previously on Dragon Ball Super: Rewritten, the canon Resurrection F arc is now known as the Frieza Family Saga, in which Cooler the Conqueror was left to run things by himself since Frieza and Cold’s deaths. Then, Cooler resurrects Frieza to whip his men up into shape, and after the long process of training that followed, Cooler, Frieza, and their army destroyed Namek and the Namekians who lived there.
The Z Fighters responded to Dende’s call for help regarding this tragedy and notice to their horror that Frieza and Cooler have arrived on Earth, and their men were more tough to deal with than even Frieza himself back in the day. During the invasion, Cooler destroyed Dende just as Piccolo sacrificed himself to save Gohan, whose anger at their deaths unlocked the Super Saiyan 3 transformation. Alas, it wasn’t enough against Cooler due to his lack of training. Then, Goku and Vegeta arrive in the nick of time before they could finish him off.
Goku and Vegeta began their battle against Cooler and Frieza, which took a heavy toll, only for Beerus to stop them and threaten that if they were to destroy the planet, he would unleash his wrath upon them. Then, Cooler and Frieza began to battle each other for supremacy over the universe, unwittingly buying the Saiyans enough time to recover and defeat the wicked brothers once and for all. But alas, without the Dragon Balls, there was no way to bring back their loved ones. And so, the frustrated and bitter Gohan decided to train with Goku and Vegeta under Whis, to eliminate his weaknesses and protect his family. Gohan’s journey continues, now!
And now, we arrive on the Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 saga. While it was really neat to see the tournament against Universe 6 and 7, which was the very first time any of us saw one universe interact with another, I was a bit… miffed. For one thing, Beerus decided to have Monaka as a stand-in for the strongest fighter in the Universe just to motivate Vegeta and Goku, which was (deep breath)… TOTALLY UNNECESSARY! It totally ruined the moment between Goku and Beerus at the Battle of Gods movie for me, so I decided to retcon that trashy idea altogether. There’s a fine line between humor and bad ideas, and apparently, Toriyama had no freaking clue when he came up with this concept.
Goku and Vegeta, as Saiyans, already strive to be stronger than they are. There was no reason for Beerus to do that at all. So, instead, I decided to change the stand-in to the actual character we wanted to see, but I won’t say who yet. It would ruin the surprise. For now, the story.
We open in on Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan (who wore Piccolo’s Gi during his time with his beloved mentor), training to their last breath… doing finger pushups. Gohan could hardly believe the pressure of doing so in their large and bulky outfits. And he especially couldn’t even believe how Goku and Vegeta could even manage to hold it together. But even so, he had to push through it. For Piccolo’s sake.
Beerus would be overseeing their progress himself alongside Whis, who would show his intrigue that Beerus hasn’t tried to go back to sleep yet. Beerus explained that for one thing, they’d just wake him up again, which was pretty likely. But the main heavy-hitter was about their potential as rivals. Beerus was wracking his brain about it since Goku fought him all that time ago. And he hasn’t forgotten how Vegeta got the huge boost in power from when Bulma got slapped either.
Despite all their potential they had yet to tap, Beerus stated that they’re nowhere near strong enough to be his arch-rival. Whis gestured to Beerus about the fact that he had to use over 70% of his power, which he hadn’t done in a long time. But between Goku and Vegeta, he may have his arch-rival after all. And, of course, it was right at that moment when Beerus and Whis had an unexpected visit from none other than… Champa and Vados.
Their conversation would go precisely like how they met in the interim of the canon Resurrection F saga. But instead of making the excuse that he was going on a stroll, Champa would give his brother a wicked smile and tell him that he had a proposition for him. Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan were puzzled by this meeting naturally, but Gohan could tell that if two destroyers were in the same place, whatever was going on wouldn’t be good.
A moment later, everyone gathered inside Beerus’ temple, where he got straight down to business. Knowing his twin brother, Beerus figured Champa had something up his sleeve. And he was right. Champa revealed that he had a contest in mind between his universe and Beerus’. At first, he took it as a joke, thinking Champa was suggesting a Pie-Eating contest given his brother’s physique. Offended, Champa insulted Beerus, which led to them fighting each other, only for Whis and Vados to stop them before Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan were disintegrated as a result of their fighting, much like the ground beneath them. That made the trio realize once again how frighteningly powerful Destroyers are, which was all the more reason to get stronger.
Moving on, Champa proclaimed that the match would be between their fighters from each respective Universe. And instead of the total being five, the total would be three. If Champa’s team wins, he gets to swap Earths with Beerus, who commented that such a feat is impossible. But it wasn’t. For Champa had all 7 Giant Wish Orbs that can grant any wish. And he meant any wish. That part especially got Gohan’s attention. If he had the 7 Super Dragon Balls, he could revive Planet Namek and its people. And their dragon balls would come back, too! This became more important to the Saiyans than ever.
Goku recognized the layout from Champa’s terms as a tournament of sorts, and decided to have it held that way. Gohan would suggest a neutral space to be sure that no team had the advantage, something that peeved Champa, but nonetheless, he agreed. And this time, the matchup in the teams is 3 vs. 3.
With the terms proposed, Champa and Vados leave, but not before Champa tossed the egg at Goku, who caught it, despite fumbling a bit. When they left, Champa could tell that despite the fumble, he could sense Goku’s innate potential as a Saiyan. And thus, Champa would be more weary of Universe 7’s fighters. So, he knew there’s one guy he can rely on to get the job done.
Meanwhile, Gohan was more determined than ever to participate. If their Universe got the Super Dragon Balls, they could bring Dende, Piccolo, and all of the Namekians back to life. If you remember, or if you missed it, Frieza and Cooler destroyed Namek before they even made it to Earth just to make sure nobody would come back once they achieved their vengeance.
So, their first step, naturally was to fully complete a team of Universe 7. With Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta, that settled their roster. However, Bulma became curious about the Super Dragon Balls. If there was a set for Universe 6, there might be another for Universe 7. Gohan would doubt it’s that simple, getting the feeling that there’s only one set to begin with, and even if there was, for all they knew, it could be scattered across the whole multiverse. To be sure, the answers to that go to Master Zuno.
He dwelled in the exact center of the 7th Universe, according to Jaco. And for the likes of Whis, it only takes about a short while to reach it since their planet is in close proximity to it. Jumping at the chance, the Saiyans, Bulma, Beerus, and Whis travel to Master Zuno’s palace. Upon arrival, they discover that they required an appointment. But, fortunately, Beerus had an appointment with Zuno himself, mostly because he wanted to know where he could find the most relaxing mattress in the 7th Universe at that time.
After getting that question out of the way and offering their own tribute, Bulma asked Zuno first about the Super Dragon Balls. Gohan felt it was a good idea, as he wanted to be certain that no error was made in the effort to restore New Namek and the Namekians who died. Much like canon, they’re only found in Universes 6 and 7, can be only used for one wish, and “Come Forth, Divine Dragon, and grant my wish, peas and carrots!” must be said in the divine tongue. The first part in particular clearly peeved off Beerus to know that his own brother was snatching his dragon balls on his own turf.
And speaking of Champa, he was on a roll, creating a new arena set on a Nameless planet, especially with the concessions. The next step was to find combatants of the 6th Universe. Naturally, in preparation for this, Champa sought out two competitors to even out the ones he met at Beerus’ planet. And then, his trump card was the final recruit.
Meanwhile, in Universe 7, all that was left was to train. And Goku knew just the place: the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Before that, they needed to let everyone in on it so that nobody would panic too soon.
When Gohan paid his wife a surprise visit, Videl could see how stressed her husband was. He tried to shake it off and let her know he was okay, but she knew that he wasn’t alright like he said he was. After convincing him to open up, Gohan tells her about the tournament between Universes 6 and 7. And he admits that there’s a chance that the 6th might be stronger than him, Goku, and Vegeta combined. And if that were to happen, he’d never forgive himself if Champa stole Earth away the same way Frieza and Cooler stole Piccolo, Dende, and all the Namekians from them.
To help him through it, Videl reveals that she knew the feeling about what it was like to be helpless. She was under Spopovich’s boot during the tournament back when Majin Buu was still a threat. It gave her a wake-up call she didn’t realize she needed, that it’s not always her job to protect people, but it didn’t do anything to hamper her faith and unwavering conviction in Gohan, either, especially since she recalled how he looked ready to murder Spopovich back then. Gohan felt his burden lifted thanks to his wife, but it also made him realize something important: how the two of them were training with Whis before things spiraled for the worst. Gohan knew Videl had agreed to it in hindsight, but he still couldn't help but apologize severely for abandoning Videl, but she told him it was alright. But Gohan still couldn’t forgive himself for it. Then, he had an idea. Once the tournament was over, Gohan wanted to train Videl again and start over their training from scratch. Videl blushed at the thought, but she said she’ll give it some thinking.
Meanwhile, Goku brought Mr. Popo up to date on what was going down, and after hearing that it could mean the return of Dende and the other Namekians, he whole-heartedly agreed to let them use it to their hearts’ content. This time, they chose to use it for three years.
In that time, Gohan sparred with Goku and Vegeta. During this grueling training, Gohan recalled the training he and Goku did prior to the Cell Games. He wanted to train his recent Super Saiyan 3 form that way to properly master it. With the drawback of heavy loss of energy in the process, Gohan was sure it would be a heavy risk, but he also knew that it’s one that he had to take.
However, Goku recalled the potential he had supposedly unlocked with Elder Kai during the crisis with Majin Buu. When asked why he wouldn’t use that form instead, he admits that he’d lost touch with that form since he hasn’t trained as much as he was supposed to. Vegeta becomes pissed and scolds him, naturally, and Gohan agreed with him. If he hadn’t skimped on his training, then his loved ones wouldn’t be put in such a horrible position. So, it gave him a new goal: rather than training his mastery of Super Saiyan 3, he was going to go back to his roots and regain his Transcended Potential.
Sometime later, Beerus and Whis gathered everyone up into the Hexahedron to transport over to the 6th Universe’s Sadala. And after several hours, Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan arrived in tow. Per Gohan’s suggestion, they managed to get the stink off of them with showers first thing. And so, they used the Hexahedron to travel all the way to the Nameless Planet.
Upon arrival, things went the way of canon, except when looking at the contestants, Gohan cringed at the dead ringer of Frieza and Cooler, Frost. His fist clenched in anger, forced to think of what they had done to Dende, Piccolo, and the Namekians. When Frost held his hand out to Gohan with a rather different nature than the two wicked brothers, Gohan was at a loss. He’d expected him to be cruel, but here, he was rather genuine. He kept his temper even and ended up shaking his hand while Cabba acquainted himself with Goku and Vegeta. Then came the Tournament of Destroyers.
For the order, it all came down to Rock, Paper, Scissors. As a result, Vegeta would go first while Goku is second and Gohan is last. And for Champa’s team’s order, the team will go to Frost first, then Cabba, followed by the mysterious and stoic Hit.
And so, the first round of Vegeta vs. Frost began. Things go the way it did on canon, with Vegeta more pissed than usual that he held back until he, on his final form was on his last legs. Frost attempted to throw a punch with all he had, but Vegeta would see this ruse straight away and jump over him before holding him in a half-Nelson, his other arm holding back the tail. In no time at all, Vegeta exposed Frost’s trickery. All the crowd was caught entirely by surprise, but after a moment, Frost snickered devilishly and exposed his true colors.
He gladly reveals that he’s been attacking the very planets he saved so he could profit from their rebuilding. Incredibly peeved, Vegeta allowed him to use whatever trickery he had like in canon, swiftly defeating him in Super Saiyan. And with that, things go the way they did in canon for the next three rounds, which means, yes, sadly, Vegeta and Goku do get defeated by Hit, the latter being more a forfeit to spite the bickering Beerus and Champa.
As much as I wanted Vegeta to win, there was no foreseeable way for him to achieve it, even with the foresight of someone else fighting before him. And with the one exception to the battle being Transcended Super Saiyan God, even Goku couldn’t win. Now, for the final round, it came down to Gohan and Hit.
That’s where things get interesting. Even after watching his dad and Vegeta fight him, Gohan doesn’t know if he really stands a chance after all. But he still had to try, for the sake of protecting his family and friends, and all of Earth. This was the one battle he must not lose, ever. Hit saw the conviction in Gohan’s eyes, but he could tell they weren’t the same as Goku’s. Suddenly, Gohan spoke out to Hit saying, “I don’t care how much stronger you are. I’m not going to let you take Earth away from me! I swore I’ll never let it happen again! NEVER!”
With that, Gohan began to power up, but instead of his hair turning yellow, it only spiked up, and he white aura overcame him, and he let loose a shout of anger. Gohan was now Ultimate Gohan once again. Shin, Kibito, and Elder Kai were struck with awe to see Gohan at his full potential once again. However, they still had their reservations. As opposed to Goku’s battle with Hit, Gohan’s form was still comparatively weaker than Super Saiyan God, and even that didn’t stand a chance. In other words, it was a losing battle.
Hit didn’t think it was necessary to power up against him, only telling him to surrender. That only served to piss off the already pressured Half-Saiyan into confronting him. With what he’d seen, Gohan was able to predict his vital spots and defend them. For every blow he took, Gohan would block and counter them.
Thanks to training with Goku and Vegeta, even prior to the whole tournament, Gohan had learned to shield his body with his aura, a technique learned in canon during the ToP arc when faced with Lavender and his poisoned fists. But for all his genius, Gohan didn’t count on Hit powering himself up.
As a result, his aura failed to protect his nerve points. Gohan was on the verge of losing, to Beerus’ horror and Champa’s delight. As Gohan struggled to stand up, Champa was already making a list of what food to try out from Earth, even musing the idea of enslaving the entire planet just to cook food for him with the risk of destroying them if they failed to meet his expectations. This frustrated Gohan to no end. It was already bad enough losing his mentor Piccolo to the likes of Frieza and Cooler, but to let a Destroyer like Champa use Earth this way… it was intolerable.
Gohan stood up back on his feet again, befuddling the Hitman once more. “Why bother getting up? You are beaten.” Gohan refused to accept that. He began to clench his fists and grit his teeth with fury laced in his voice. “If I am beaten… Then why am I still standing?!” Gohan looked up at Hit and flashed his now demonic red eyes at him, shocking him beyond belief before Gohan set loose a powerful shockwave of red and purple energy all over the arena. Universes 6 and 7 looked on in astonishment as Gohan had begun to reach a new level of his potential. Shin and Kibito were naturally stunned by this sudden appearance of power, but Elder Kai had a theory about what it may be.
Thinking back to the time when Majin Buu was a threat, Elder Kai realized that he overlooked the vastness of Gohan’s potential as a whole, having only done so for several hours instead of a full day. But here, Gohan had begun to scratch the surface. He’d begun to enter a new level of his potential. And no, he isn’t Beast Gohan… technically. Rather, it’s the first sign of it, or Beast -Sign-, as I would call it. He still has his black hair, but his front strand was a bit longer than normal, while his hair stood on end like Super Saiyan 2. And the most notable sign was his piercing red eyes.
Hit was caught off-guard by Gohan’s sudden boost for a moment, but he welcomed the challenge all the same. As for the crowd, everyone was completely caught by surprise… well, that is, except for Goku and Vegeta. In fact, they were counting on this development.
In the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, during their three year training, Gohan had just reattained his Unleashed Potential. Due to the advice that Elder Kai gave him back when he achieved it, Gohan felt it was where he peaked, which irked him now where it didn’t before. Even he knew it wasn’t enough. If he truly wanted to protect those he loved, Gohan had to become stronger than he is now, which means a new form nobody had seen before. Vegeta was the first to be on board with Gohan’s way of thinking. In fact, he was laughing almost boisterously, like Gohan had become his son.
“Spoken like a true Saiyan at last! Alright, then, boy. If you want to achieve this new level of power, then come at me and Kakarot with all you have! Because that’s what we’re giving you!”
Goku and Vegeta had trained with Gohan in their respective forms, Super Saiyan God for Vegeta, and the Transcended variant for Goku. Both forms would have been too much for him to handle normally, but thanks to his training with Whis, Gohan had learned to adapt himself to this energy and apply it to his own, similar to how Goku and Vegeta learned to wield this god form on their own.
Cut back to the Tournament, and Goku and even Vegeta were watching Gohan with pride. Vegeta was still irked that he couldn’t defeat Hit himself, but he could tell that Gohan was becoming more of a Saiyan than ever before. And Goku was once again reminded of when he entrusted Gohan with Earth’s protection after Cell’s defeat. And he couldn’t have been any prouder than this very moment knowing he’s taken it a step further.
Meanwhile, Hit began to try to attack Gohan in his vital points to knock him out and either force him to forfeit or ring him out. But neither of the strikes he’d made to his vitals fazed Gohan at all! His aura was once again shielding him from Hit’s otherwise near-fatal blows. “Is that all you got?”, Gohan asked. For the first time, the assassin of Universe 6 was… afraid. He’d seen it all over his victims’ faces whenever he carried out his jobs, but never before had someone made him feel the exact same way.
“Okay, then. Guess it’s my turn.” Gohan made the first blow with a punch to the stomach, sending Hit backwards and causing Champa to panic. Gohan held back as much of his power as he could to keep himself from killing him, as it was against the rules, just like Hit was. Videl could hardly believe he was the same person she used to pick on him for, let alone the same person who used to be so awkward around her. It totally surprised her, but Videl could tell that he will win this tournament.
At the arena, Gohan was putting Hit on the ropes as Champa barked at him. “What do you think you’re doing?! I didn’t put you in this team just so you could lose! Use your Time Skip!” But it did him no good, even if he did use it. Gohan’s sign of new power was enough to breach even Hit’s ability! Gohan was about to finish him off, but Hit boosted his power once again at the last minute, matching himself with the likes of Gohan’s capability.
Gohan was obviously miffed that he couldn’t finish in time, but he did take consolation in one thing: he didn’t have to hold back anymore. He began to shield his body with his aura once again as he moved in to strike the assassin. It had become a War of Attrition, a battle of endurance. Goku and Vegeta were practically biting their nails. They trained Gohan to access this new level, but they feared that they may not be enough with an assassin’s power dwarfing even their own.
And as the battle dragged out, Hit found himself… enjoying all this. Gohan was nowhere near as naive as his father was, and somehow, he adapted to a new level of power, forcing him to go beyond his own limit. Hit had never known something like this his whole career. He was no longer an assassin in this match: he was a martial artist.
In this long-endured Battle of Wills, though, Gohan finished Hit with a heavy kick to the stomach and launched him off of the ring. And just in time, too, for Gohan was on the verge of running out of this new power. And so, Universe 7 won the Tournament of Destroyers. And like in canon, the humiliated Champa prepared to destroy his losing team for it. Unwilling to let that happen, Gohan called out Champa and declared a deal. If Gohan were to defeat him, he’d spare his losing team and let them live. If he were to lose, though, Champa can take his anger out on Gohan by destroying him instead. After all, he was the one who humiliated him to begin with.
Champa eagerly accepted and prepared to fight him despite his weakened state when suddenly, he and Beerus noticed the Omni-King of the Multiverse, Grand Zeno, and his attendant, the Grand Minister. Things go exactly the way it did in canon from there, but this time, after learning from Beerus about who he was, Gohan kept Goku from opening his big mouth and by extension put the destroyers at risk. Goku still projected his opinion on Zeno's idea of a multiversal tournament, however, and he couldn't agree more. As for Gohan, he walked up to Zeno, showed him the proper respect, and admitted that as high as the stakes were, it turned out to be a lot of fun for him. He was still a scholar at heart, but Gohan had felt legitimately pumped up for the first time in a long time. Zeno held his hand out to him and Gohan shook it gently, making sure he didn’t end up crushing it. Zeno liked him for how cool and nice he was whilst he took a liking to Goku for how silly he is before he and his guards took their leave.
And from there, Champa decided that he’ll train his team to become stronger for the next Tournament, and this time, he’ll win. With that, Gohan and the Z-Fighters had summoned Super Shenron and restored Universe 7’s Namekian race, including Piccolo and Dende, thus restoring Earth’s Dragon Balls once again. On the other hand, Champa was still embittered by the fact that he didn’t get Beerus’ Earth like he wanted. And he swore that he’ll do whatever it takes to get it.
In the downtime, as everyone celebrated Gohan’s victory in the tournament, Videl came forward to him and admitted that seeing Gohan get as strong as he had made her all fired up. Even the recently revived Piccolo was inspired to hear that Gohan had tapped into a new power in his absence. However, it was still incomplete as Gohan hadn’t been able to master it as he hoped. And of course, Gohan recalled that Videl would think over his offer to train with her. Ultimately, she decided to train with him. Admittedly, she had been thinking of starting a Martial Arts School to help out with the incomes. And if she was going to do so, she needed to be at her best. And so, Videl and Gohan both ask Piccolo to help train them both to help each other out. And so, the humbled and renewed Piccolo agreed to train them on the condition that they give it everything they had, which they both agreed to.
Over time, it became more of a family outing where Gohan ended up getting more training like he was meant to while balancing out the conferences he'd be getting. He even began to study more into the terms of energy to understand it better himself and to present it to the others and blow their minds away. From there, Gohan would occasionally train with Piccolo and Videl while their baby daughter Pan would watch, and in the later years, she would emulate them.
However, they remain unaware of a sinister plot that lies in the far-off future, ready to strike the Multiverse where it will bleed…
And that was Part 2. It’s clear what Part 3 will entangle, and I’ll at least let you know that changes to this are LOOOONNNNGGG overdue. Be sure to keep an eye out for it.
