Description
Paper is an interesting material. In this case a sheet from my sketchbook cut into a strip then tied in a single over-hand "knot". Mathematically it isn't a knot but that's a different discussion. The point here is that paper can readily be used to model a sheet of metal -- somewhat crumpled in this instance. Paper has enough strength relative to its weight that this "knot" can stand up without any external support. A similar structure made of cloth (a pillow case for example) will not support its own weight when it is placed on end. Paper can,....hence my next sketch.Related content

Thank you for the compliment. I find delicately graduated tonal shading -- trying to make a smoothly graded effect from dark to light (or the reverse) -- is a great exercise for one's sensitivity of touch.
