Description
In 1931 the Ashlain board of military procurement approached Strauss, Boch & Donnetti for a closed contract that allowed the company exclusive rights to build the critical support vehicles of the Ashlain military as their older vehicles were starting to show age. The Board wanted to streamline the process by switching to contracting from a singular company within the borders of the Kingdom of Ashlain. In prior budgetary decades the purchasing of vehicles by the military was done by the individual branch of service within limits set by the Military command and allowed by the Parliament. Now, all the core vehicles, their parts and the maintenance training for the motor pool staff would come from one place, thus greatly simplifying operations. SBD was tasked with designing a fairly modular general purpose vehicle, and a modular 2-ton truck both of which had an ‘swimming’ amphibious variant and both of which in either form were able to handle the wetlands and jungles common to Ashlain territory. SBD developed both in just shy of two years in the form of the AMV-CDV8-GPT (general purpose truck) and the SBD-AMV4-GPV.SBD-AMV6A (Ashlain Military Vehicle- Amphibious, 6x6)
SBD responded to the requirement for an amphibious truck by heavily revising the existing GPT chassis to have a boat hull design that has a somewhat flat bottom. A small propeller and rudder were added to the rear of the vessel and to some extent the rotation to its tires aid in propulsion if the propeller is not functioning as both cannot be engaged at once. Due to the need for a sloped boat like front and rear of the vehicle the Amphibious GPT looks much bigger than it is, and indeed the modifications reduce the original cargo capacity to just 2.5 tons. While being capable of just 7 miles per hour in the water and about 48 miles per hour on land it is no surprise that the amphibious GPT has become very popular for responding to natural disasters and for the fact it tends not to make its passengers sea sick in rough waters. The Ashlain Military utilizes the vehicles as an integral part of their amphibious warfare strategy but this vehicle in a stripped down form is also used by the Ashlain state police as well.
SBD-AMV-A (Ashlain Military Vehicle-Amphibious ¼ ton, 4x4)
The Amphibious version of the GPV was part of the contract offered to SBD, as part of the contract. In general it is a GPV converted for the express purpose of being able to go where the Amphibious GPT cannot go and as an asset in flooded urban areas. In general the characteristics of the amphibious GPV are identical to the normal model except for the fact that cargo space is much more limited and operators must pay more attention to balancing the weight. Overall the amphibious version was capable on land of a maximum speed of 55 miles per hour, while in the water it was capable of 7 miles per hour due use of its propeller and rudder system.
SBD-AMV4-GPV (Ashlain Military Vehicle ¼ ton, 4x4)
The SBD-AMV4-GPV came about due to the need for a standardized military vehicle capable of handling the rigors of field use but also was easy to maintain, durable and reliable. The AMV4 weighs only a ton in a unloaded dry state but 2.5 tons when in combat condition. The top speed of the GPV is 60 miles per hour however this speed is for short periods as it over taxes the engine. Recommended safe speed for the GPV is 50 mph, while the 16 gallon fuel tank allows for an operational range of 340 miles.
