Description
So here's the thing... I'm kind of a Godzilla fan now.
I mean, I always liked Godzilla, but until recently I'd only seen the three American films (barring the one which only just came out this year), the 1954 Japanese original, and the mildly butchered American dub of King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962). Everything changed, though, when YouTube suddenly recommended a 3-hour video reviewing all 35 Godzilla films (YES, 35). As someone who knew little about the franchise's long history, I thought it could be interesting. Sure enough, before the video was even halfway done I was making my own plans to get ahold of all the films. Oh, how naive I was.
I'd heard about a lovely (if expensive) Blu-ray box set courtesy of The Criterion Collection, but it turned out that only offered the first 15 films, known as the Shōwa era. As for the rest? Whoof. That was a rabbit hole and a half. I think the comic speaks for itself there. So by now, I've managed to import all the available ones out of the three classic series (Shōwa, 1954-1975; Heisei, 1984-1995; and Millennium, 1999-2004), but three of the Heisei films are out of print and heinously expensive. I already spent £300 in total on all these Blu-rays in the last month, but those last three films alone go for £200 a pop on eBay. So that's annoying. Hopefully there'll be reprints or even new releases by the time we get to them on family film night in a few months...
We've got plenty to go on in the meantime, though. So far we've watched the first three films, plus "Rodan" and "Mothra", starring monsters who would become part of the Godzilla universe later down the line. I'm still excited for more! In fact, the golden age of films 4-6 is just on the horizon...
So long story short, I made a little comic about my experience trying to get all the Godzilla films. I think the boy turned out pretty cute in the first few panels, but the Tokyo cityscape was a bit much for me. I'm still only able to work in short bursts, and I wanted to finish this before the end of the month, so here we are. Drawing the title (リンジラ ≈ "Linzilla") in the style of the original 1954 film's poster was fun, though.
(And no, this doesn't count as TF or macro. Get your minds out of the gutter. )
