Description
Autumn 2022
18"x24" plus frame
Pencil with pen and ink; custom frame
Created over 150 hours, this drawing was developed through many layers of pencil and heightened with black and white ink. The Libyan Sibyl of Michelangelo’s Sistine Ceiling is glorified here in an alternate context. Among the most famous images of Western art, the sibyl stands for the triumphs and idiosyncrasies of the established artistic tradition. The whale evokes the grand presence of consciousness in the depths and is surrounded by entities inspired by medieval and renaissance jewelry. The dragon in the bottom-left evokes the ancient Mayan deity symbolic of transformation. At the bottom-right, an angel inspired by the late medieval painter Giotto holds a vase of mushrooms, suggestive of the psychedelic aspect of visionary experience. In the upper-left corner, we see the most famous paleolithic sculpture, the “Venus” of Willendorf, an archaic artifact about 25,000 years old, which is thought to embody the “divine feminine” worldview of upper paleolithic culture. At the upper-right, anime fans will recognize the heroic Naruto, the unceasingly courageous ninja-warrior and friend to all that is good in the world.
The eclectic selection of figures and motifs to be discovered throughout this composition weaves together a visionary narrative of dream and poetry, both descending and rising, and is unified by the great Eye of consciousness and prophetic figure illuminating the depths.
