Do you know how to get those smooth lines around characters in gimp 2.6?

i know it^^ i hope, you can understand my english XD:
1. you have the outlines on an extra layer ;D
2. take the wand, click anywhere on the outlines layer (but outside of the character) - the character is selected (the edges, too, but i will come to that later)
3. make a new layer
4. choose the color you want
5. on the new layer, you click on "edit" (top left)
6. click on "follow selection(?)"
7. then a little window opens, there you can change the settings
8. click on "follow(?)"
9. now the character is framed
10. aand now click on "selection(?)" -> "deselect(?)"
11. now you can continue drawing^^ you just need to erase the edges and finished C:
