The free version, if I'm correct, is barely the game at all. It's Minecraft Alpha (the game is currently in beta), which only allows you to run around and place/break blocks. It doesn't include any actual crafting, day/night cycles, world saving, mobs, achievements, or anything that makes the game really fun.

In fact it does, what are you describing is the CReative mode, this is the actual minecraft website. But there's this site called minecraftforfree that actually has the survival mode
