The AI has jokes. It put my first polka dancers in polka dots. So, I had to look it up. Mental Floss Magazine (a great source for odds and ends of facts) says the fabric pattern was re-named during America's polka dance craze. It was one of those jumping on the popularity bandwagon things. So, the fabric has nothing to do with the dance. There's your textile history lesson for the day.

I do have a joke I like to use, since I've never heard anyone pronounce the "L" when saying the fabric's name. It's always more like "poke-a-dot." So, if you know a child who likes to wear this fabric, you can ask, "Do you know why it's called poke-a-dot? Poke. Poke. Poke." As you poke the dots. I say do this with a child you know because adults won't take to being poked as well.
