Description
I like to think Jay Ward and Bill Scott would have liked that pun.My entry for this year's Obscuri-Jam www.deviantart.com/journal/Obs… is a largely forgotten pair of characters today, but who are very important to the history of animation: Crusader Rabbit and his friend, Ragland T. Tiger.
Created by Alexander Anderson, but rejected as a theatrical short, Anderson found a backer in Los Angeles businessman Jay Ward. Together they produced the show for the new medium of television. Because the medium was new, stations were desperate for programming. So the adventures of Crusader Rabbit became the first animated series produced specifically for television. Every animated show on today travels the path blazed by Crusader Rabbit.
But if that wasn't enough, we also owe C.R. for getting Jay Ward into animation. Thanks to him taking a chance on Anderson's idea, we were able to have Rocky And Bullwinkle, Dudley Do-Right, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, George of the Jungle and some very entertaining commercials in the seventies for Cap'n Crunch.
Crusader is pretty obscure to most people today. But we all owe the little guy a lot.

Thanks for giving us the history behind these characters. I didn't know Rags' full name.
In the '50's and early '60's there was a half-hour kiddie TV show on a Boston station at 12:30, Big Brother. At 1:00 there was a half-hour talk show aimed at housewives. To prevent the kids from turning off the TV after Big Brother, the first thing on the talk show was an episode of Crusader Rabbit. The idea being that, with the TV already being on, the mothers would then watch the rest of the talk show.

What a flash from the past. I used to love watching C.R. back in the early 60's as a kid. Man, I feel old...
