I've been planning to have Simba have a near-death experience for a long time now. I decided early on that he wasn't meant to actually die because that already happens in 's "Marks of the Past" that I've brought up a few times, but there was going to be a horrific accident. I ruled out falling off something such as into the gorge early on too, because that's how he dies in Irete's comic, so that left drowning, getting attacked by his own people, or getting crushed by something as the possibilities I was keeping. The first idea was that Simba became extremely paranoid about his own family plotting against him, so when they offered him help, he ran away from Pride Rock and got stuck in a collapsing cave, which was kind of inspired by TLG. Then I decided the event that got him so worked up was the final assassination attempt. Rafiki and Nirmala would have managed to wake him, but he would have freaked out about the whole attack and run off to be alone, unknowingly putting himself in danger yet again. Then, while I was working on the attack scene, I just decided to have his near-drowning put him into a coma and scrap the cave scene entirely, the idea being that the climax wouldn't drag on for too long and we could finally get our resolution. As for what happens next? You'll just have to wait and see.
