The sirens pierced a normally quiet night. It wasn't often you'd hear them, since they'd attract attention to the area, but this was a special occasion. There was a containment breach. That's about all they said, but combine that with the sirens and you had to figure it was something pretty big. There were a lot of black vans that showed up, not a bit of marked police presence this night.

Enough money had found its way into the right pockets that the end of the world could be coming and everyone would still turn their head. On a night like this one, that money was well worth it.

About a good 30 miles away and nowhere near the sound of the sirens, four roommates were gathering around a bowl of popcorn for another quiet night. It had been two months since a man set foot in the home and tonight wasn't about to change that. These women weren't on the prowl or anything. Instead, they just didn't feel the need to go out. They had their reasons and it stemmed from the last time they went out.

Jane had been called a fat mess by someone despite the fact she really wasn't overweight. Sure, she put on a couple of pounds and hadn't gone clothes shopping recently, but that dress didn't look THAT bad on her.

Cynthia on the otherhand was called a scarecrow just because she had a wiry frame and her blonde hair was kind of everywhere. It was raining that night and water hasn't exactly done her hair any favors in the past.

Angelica had the misfortune of trying to defend the other two after one too many and possibly having something slipped in her drink. The vomit was a really good date-rape defense had that been the case.

And then there was poor Holly. She was homeschooled and didn't really get out much, even in college. But somehow she ended up in this social circle and there was just this level of comfort from her friends she couldn't deny. A distant relative's death left her with a tidy sum of money that took care of this lifestyle. It wasn't something that could last forever, but dammit, there's a reason for everything and she wasn't going to break up this pack.

But as comfy as things had gotten, change was in the air.
