Tiny Barbarian is now available for you to play! It's a short game inspired by R. E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian story, The Frost Giant's Daughter, and it's free to play! I hope you enjoy it!

Where to start? Your game was totally awesome! The slick animations, the epic music that, when it's not bringing back memories from the good old SNES era, is pumping you up while you're surrounded by wolves and skeletons, the plot, simple but so dang effective, and that part where the witch starts casting spells at you...

I know it's just february, but this is one of the best game I played this year, and I'm sure I'll still think the same when the year will be over.

Don't stop there, honestly, read more Conan stories and bring on the witches, cultists, giant snakes, even Crom atop his cloudy mountain because I want moar Tiny Barbarian!

Awesome, glad you enjoyed it! (Don't forget that was also the good old Genesis era, too!) I don't know for sure what form Tiny B's next adventure will take, but rest assured, I've read the other stories too.

Even with the hints, I just can't get past the giants in Tiny Barbarian.

Personally I think pattern bosses are kind of silly when they have that much health, because if you know the pattern just right you're not getting hit anyway (Unless your reflexes suck like mine), and if you don't know the pattern you're getting eradicated in the first or second wave. Even after dodging the last ones homing jumps, I can't really attack it because it always knows exactly how high to shoot its little spheres to hit me, so I can't get close at any point after the first giant is gone. The only way I could conceivably do it is if I counted how many hits it took to kill a giant, then hit them both until one has only one hit left and finish off the other. Then I would be able to take the other down right after the homing jump. But theres just no way in hell I'm going to bother doing that.

And before anyone says "Lol Norrec hates hard games" I'd like to point out I LOVE hard games, but theres a line you have to draw. I love Demon's Souls and God Hand, but they rewarded attention and planning, while this just punishes you for not being perfect. A good example is the sorcerer before the giants fight, the fight is difficult enough that if you get hit even once by the sorcerer you might as well commit suicide, and "Restarting at the checkpoint" is either not an option or not something the player is told about, and there isn't any instant death traps, and theres a mercy invincibility thats short enough to be nearly useless but long enough to make dying on purpose a pain. So you have to spend more time getting hit so that you can try again now that you're all angry and not thinking straight.

To be honest, I feel a game that is just way too hard even when you know exactly what you need to do deserves to be called "Hard because its unfair" rather then "Hard because you have to think or pay attention."

Thanks for taking the time to write all that out, and I do appreciate a different view. You listed God Hand (Jesus, even *I* gave up on that one) and Demon's Souls as your examples of "hard games," but how do you feel about more classic examples like early Castlevania, Gradius, Contra, or MegaMan? Those are the sort of games that had an influence on Tiny Barbarian. Not to say that any of these games are harder than one another, but they represent a very sort of challenge.

Just to get straight what part you actually had a problem with, it's the projectiles from the single giant, right? It sounds like you were able to beat the two together ok (did you use these strategies or did you figure one out yourself? [link] ), but were you also able to use the combo consistently? They can be wiped out pretty quickly if you get the combo in correctly, that is why they have so much health. (If you concentrate entirely on the one who lands second/on the right, you can destroy him in under two rounds)

This really is good feedback--several people have mentioned the individual giant's attacks being a problem, but I always assumed it was the homing attack!

If you do want to give it another shot, it might help to know that the single giant doesn't "know" anything--his shots come out in a fixed pattern (low, low, high low high), the same shots placed the same height as before, they're just grouped closer together. You do have to be aggressive to get in close.

*Slaps forehead* OH I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THERE WAS A PATTERN!

I actually figured out the "keep projectiles coming from one direction" thing (after about ten tries lol), and the homing jump after getting hit about three times (derp) but its still basically as hard as dodging the sorcerers projectiles for me: I can dodge them, but every tenth time or so I get hit. It was the projectiles that was the main problem, I assumed that it would somehow figure out from my position where to attack.

But yeah if you were going for contra or Castlevania or Megaman you got the vibe right on. Its like playing one of those on a super hard difficulty with an infinite lives cheat to compensate to me. Thank god for the infinite tries, I would never have gotten that far otherwise.

Great job with this, I love these mini-style games! Kinda makes me wanna get back into this stuff, but I must resist!

Well I mainly stopped so that I could focus solely on my artwork, but it was also slightly annoying to spend weeks/months working on a game only to have a handful of people actually play it

True I didn't know you'd made any games! Are they around anywhere?

BenHickling In reply to gsilverfish [2011-01-27 23:41:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah they're available on my dusty, un-updated website [link] ;D

The GameMaker games were never converted to the latest version, so they might not run on Windows Vista or 7, if you have either of those

It was still a pretty smooth game though, it looked nice. Not that I expect you'd go back and add them, but your website could have used some screen shots.

Oh man that was great fun but I got so annoyed at the boss. Haha ive yet to beat both of them (I can beat one and damn near beat the other. Better luck next time)

This game is brilliant, I think if you made apps for the ipone/pod (etcetera) They'd definitely sell because they are so damn fun

Neither could I those wolves would be hell to beat without ninja fast keyboard attacks.

Im just'a sayin' if you did decide to make a charming retroish game like this, and made it for a app I bet itd sell . Hell I know I'd buy it, I waste 59p on stupid things like fruit ninja and this is 100X more appealing.

Will you be making any more games in the future?

Yup, that is the end!

I'll give you a tip, if you're having trouble avoiding their dual attack: no matter what, they always land in the same place before attacking, and you can exploit this! Good luck, if you choose to try again
