En algun lugar de Coahuila, México, un ejemplar macho de borrego cimarrón (Ovis canadensis) contempla, desde su hogar en la montañas el arido paisaje del desierto mientras su rebaño (que no esta muy lejos) se alimenta de las plantas que crecen las laderas.

La historia de este macho y su rebaño no es como la de otros habitantes del desierto (ni siquiera como la de sus antepasados) pues se trata de ejemplares que fueron donados y traidos desde otros paises para repoblar aquellas areas de las que se tiene constancia de su presencia, pues antiguamente el borrego cimarrón se distribuia desde el suroeste de Canada, hasta el norte de México y en el caso de este ultimo se le podia encontrar, ademas de los estados de Baja California y Sonora, en Chihuahua, Coahuila y Nuevo León.

No obstante a pesar de este triunfo de la conservación, el borrego cimarrón aun tienen muchos desafios que afrontar. Al parecer en el area donde habita macho y su manada hay indicios de la presencia del chivo de berberisco (Ammotragus lervia), una especie oriunda del norte de africa que fue traida por propositos cigeneticos pero que logro expandirse mas alla de las reservas de caza y ahora diambula libremente en un ecosistema del cual no es nativo y que al tener las mismas adaptaciones que su pariente norteamerico, respresenta para este ultimo una seria amenaza a su supervivencia.

The history of this male and his herd is not like that of other inhabitants of the desert (not even like that of their ancestors) because they are specimens that were donated and brought from other countries to repopulate those areas where there is evidence of its presence, since in the past the bighorn sheep was distributed from southwestern Canada to northern Mexico and in the latter case it could be found, in addition to the states of Baja California and Sonora, in Chihuahua, Coahuila and Nuevo León .

Yet despite this conservation triumph, bighorn sheep still have many challenges to face. Apparently, in the area where the male and his herd live, there are indications of the presence of the Barbary goat (Ammotragus lervia), a species native to North Africa that was brought for genetic purposes but managed to expand beyond the hunting reserves and Now it roams freely in an ecosystem to which it is not native and which, having the same adaptations as its North American relative, represents a serious threat to its survival for the latter.
