I've been a serious fan of NFL football since 1975 when I watched Dallas knock the Vikings out of the playoffs with the original "Hail Mary" pass on live TV. I've been seeing a lot of comments on the web recently about Bill Belichick and the current state of his team, the New England Patriots. There seems to be a lot of talk about him getting fired at the end of the season. What I find perplexing are the comments that acknowledge Tom Brady's contributions to his team's success but in the same breath they also mention Belichick as a "guru" or "greatest coach in the history of the league." The simple fact is that in games without Tom Brady, Bill Belichick has a losing record as a head coach. I feel that if Bill Belichick was really a "guru" or has some special knowledge of the game, he wouldn't have been involved in three highly publicized cheating scandals. If you're that great a coach, why would you need to cheat? Also, his complete lack of a successful coaching tree is a concern. If his former assistant coaches couldn't transfer "The Patriot Way" to other teams when they became head coaches, what special abilities could Belichick possibly have? The only special ability he seems to have is his knack for finding ways to illegally obtain a competitive edge over his opponents, which earned him the second-highest fine ever levied by the league. This man is bad for the game. My earnest hope is that his involvement in the multiple cheating scandals will prevent him from ever being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This guy has taken a game that I love and shit all over it. And I don't buy the excuse that he was unaware of the cheating. It's been said by multiple former Patriot players that Belichick (who is also the de facto General Manager of the team) is a complete control freak and that there is "no aspect of Patriot football operations that he is unaware of." As of this writing, the Pats are 2-9 and their next five games are Chargers-Steelers-Chiefs-Broncos-Bills (with three of the five being road games). I get the feeling that the Patriots are about to enter the "shadow of the valley of death." Good luck, Bill.....you're going to need it.
