I don't really have an opinion on ships and just think that Emilia is the only candidate to win the election for queen. It seems absolutely outrageous, in real life AND in fiction, that the only proper candidate that does not stick behind some flawed ideology or is completely clueless on how the world works is least likely to be elected just because she is born a certain race. And of course, Subaru would be outraged by this too. But his attempt to support Emilia in timeline eight fell flat on his face because he was thinking with his sex drive instead of his brain to poke holes in all the excuses that people would make when they refuse to vote for Emilia.
I never had a high opinion of Rem until I saw her back story where she saw herself as the "inferior twin" compared to her sister. Yet, in spite of this, she cared enough about her to swear vengeance on the cultists who severed her horn, and stuck by her when she got employed as a maid as Roswall's manor. She bonded with Subaru during timeline eight, where they felt a connection for being the "inferior" who is fighting against the universe just to do the right thing.
A good portion of the internet flared up when Rem, in timeline eleven, chatted with a PTSD ridden Subaru about running away and laid out a whole life plan, up to and including, getting married and having kids. Subaru responded by saying "But I love Emilia", and the cannons on the ship went boom. What he was trying to say is that he didn't want to run away from the world's problems and feels that it's a job not worth doing if nobody thanks or supports him. And that if he runs away from problems, they will still occur without his involvement. Yeah...For a guy who's has to become a manipulator to survive, he is NOT good with words.

Subaru is only human. He makes mistakes and stumbles and falls all the time. He makes excuses
and thinks he can solve everything by himself.Β He is arrogant and misguided and it's true he's not
great with words but no matter how long it takes for him to come around he still tries even though
he knows he isn't really a hero but he still tries regardless. That's why I respect Subaru so much
Talking about the Rem/Emilia debate it's true that Rem seems like the obvious choice for sticking
by Subaru the whole time it wouldn't be the rightΒ choice for Subaru. He loves Emilia and if he just
flipped over to Rem the he wouldn't be true to himself. That would just make him even more undescisve
than heΒ already was and would signify he's given up on Emilia and that would also make him a coward.
He is fighting for Emilia even though he knows Rem loves him andΒ that he could live happily with her.
This makes Subaru a true hero in my eyes and a real man. Fight for what you want even though it may
cost you more than you bargained for and you know you might not succeed. That's what being true to
yourself really means.
