there are many reasons of it, i dont know the geologicall characteristic of the groung, but, it it possible that the earth in this place is weak, as i see those pines are not that big also, adding the poor characteristic of the ground & the trees covering the sunlight... the smaller plants, and other trees has a very very long way to rise from the ground, dont forget about the low level of groundwater in this place, the pines are strong for the lack of water, but the lower plants those more green
its a shortcut about why the ground is soo clear
