Description
The Pyrocasters, formerly the Infernus Legion, is a chapter of renegade space marines who were nearly wiped out by the Crimson Fists upon turning renegade. The Infernus Legion was a successor legion to the Blood Angels chapter. Because of this, they are susceptible to the Red Thirst, the curse that plagues the Blood Angels and its successor legions. The Infernus Legion had a very intriguing mutation upon its formation. While the Red Thirst causes those who carry the Blood Angels’ gene-seed to thirst for blood, the Infernus Legion had a thirst for flames. Many astartes began to grow a fascination in fire. These fascinations lead to the Infernus Legion preferring the use of flame-based weapons and close-quarters combat so that they may see their enemies burn. The Legion’s flames were the Emperor’s blade cutting a swath of holy light through the unclean. Fascination soon became fanaticism and fanaticism soon came under suspicion. On the jungle world of Juktas III the Infernus Legion was sent to purge the green menace that had befallen the small world. The orks had invaded within the previous weeks before the Infernus Legion had arrived and had a strong foothold on the planet’s southernmost continent. Nearly a month of warfare had passed in an attempt to purge the aliens from the planet’s surface, with the war leaning in the Imperium’s favor, then came the Juktas Incident. Librarian Cratus, a specialist in pyromancy, overexerted his control of his powers during a battle in one of Juktas’ many jungles. With a single gesture the librarian set nearly a half-kilometer of jungle ablaze. Orks, astartes, and guardsmen alike were burned to ash. Those marines not incinerated were filled with a sense of euphoria at the sight of the blaze and the agonized screams of the fire’s victims. In a frenzy, astartes began turning their weapons on both ork and guardsmen, burning everyone and everything in sight innocent or otherwise. The librarian responsible felt no remorse for his actions, but joy.
Shortly after the incident, the inquisition was called in to question what had truly happened on the surface of Juktas III. The master of the chapter, Jurulious Sept, dismissed the incident as nothing more than an accident. The inquisitor, Helix Metz, knew that the chapter master was protecting the chapter but he had no real proof of heresy or renegade activity. Soon fanaticism began to spread through the chapter causing many astartes to become pyromaniacs. Rituals, prayers, and even sacrifices began to take place all around their twisted devotion to the flames. Inquisitor Metz was again sent to investigate the allegations of the Infernus Legion’s possible acts of heresy. This time, Metz did not return with a report for all that was left of him was ash.
After losing contact with inquisitor Metz, the inquisitions suspicions were confirmed. The once loyal chapter of the Infernus Legion had turned renegade. In response, the Crimson Fists were sent to eradicate the heretics. The Infernus Legion was attacked on their homeworld of Hephaestus. The Crimson Fists had caught the nearly crazed marines practically off-guard. The Infernus Legion was forced to flee from their home or face complete annihilation. Much of the legion was destroyed, but those that survived fled to the realm of the Screaming Vortex. Their chapter master was slain during the escape, claiming that they were still loyal to the Emperor even with his dying breath. Now in command, Hector Shen, The Fire Walker, First Captain of the Infernus Legion renounced the chapter’s loyalty to the Emperor and the Imperium of Man and declared its new name: The Pyrocasters.
The Pyrocasters not roam the Screaming Vortex aboard their strike cruiser, the Burning Ascension, setting worlds ablaze in holy worship, not to the God-Emperor, but to the gods of chaos. Many of their minds have been broken and all that is left is nothing but fire-crazed insanity. They have learned of ways to summon the denizens of the warp and with the help of unholy, burning demons and a hefty amount of promethium, few can stand before their burning touch.
