Marissa was born to Lord Calvin Knowles, a man renowned for his short temper, cruel temperament, and waning fiefdom. Taking after her father, Marissa was born horrendously ugly, which frustrated his early attempts to marry her off. Not wanting to be her father’s political pawn, Marissa ran away at the age of 15.

She took a horse and rode under the full moon until she found the bog where a hag was known to live. While most people make a deal with a hag in desperation, Marissa went in with a clear head and in a brilliant act of deceit, Marissa asked the hag for “entrancing beauty to ensnare her suitors,” knowing fully well how the hag would twist her wish.

Marissa left having gotten almost exactly what she wanted: Turned into a lamia with a beautiful upper body. While she had been hoping for hypnosis as well, her magical gaze cannot control people and only place them in a placid state.

She now lives high in the mountains with her boyfriend, a werewolf, and uses her pacifying gaze to help him control the rage his curse brings.
