Genesis Planet
Commander Hamm took cover behind a tree, while the rest of his team took cover around various local terrain. The team was several hundred meters from a building that was suppose to hold one of several Composers that were located on the planet Genesis.
Agent Lau tapped his TacPad to deploy a drone from his specialist pack. The drone unsnapped itself from the pack and hover a foot away from the Spartan before activating its active camouflage.
The drone moved into the clearing and began to scan the immediate area for any enemies and then began to scan the skies above. The drone didn’t detect any threats in the immediate area, that were just outside of one of the facilities that held a Composer.
Above in the sky were three Septagon Empire Cruisers, two Harrower Class Assault Cruisers being lead by a Imperial Class Heavy Cruiser. The Cruisers were being escorted by four Destroyers. The Harrower Class then began to deploy its fighters from its side hanger to scout the area.
“Scans are showing negative contacts in the area,” said Lau over the communication frequency, “there may be some security inside the facility, but I am not detecting any signs imperials.”
“It looks like they are still in the process of deploying,” said Jacqueline, “Doing a standard scouting perimeter, they won’t be deploying troops for another thirty minutes.”
“Do you think we can count on having thirty minutes,” asked Liyet, who was the only ground team member of Delta Team who was not wearing MJONIR armor. Instead the Asari wore an ONI version of ODST BDU armor system with several advance enhancements. The most notable was an upgraded energy shield that were found on specialist troops and the officer combat uniform. Additionally ONI equipped the armor with the same advance active camouflage system that Delta Team’s MOJNIR armor systems had.
“Hoping yes, but if they are going to deploy aggressively we may only have ten minutes,” commented Commander Hamm.
“Then we need to move out quickly, if we stick to those tree lines, we can keep undetected by the imperial sensors,” said Alan Willmore who was scanning the area with his SRS99, “We could try walking out in the open, but we would have to move slowly with our active camo to not be detected by the Imperial sensors.”
“I concurred,” said Agent Lau whose drone had just returned and reattached itself to his specialist pack.
Commander Hamm nodded in agreement. The team activated their active camouflage and began to move through the tree line quickly. While the team would have been able to move to the Facility directly through the field, they would have risked detection if they ran to the facility. By keeping to the tree line, they would reach the site quickly and undetected.
Delta Team moved towards the entrance of the facility. Since the facility entrance was protected by an overhang, the team deactivated their camouflage without the fear of detection.
“Maybe we should have just walked slowly across the open field,” said Liyet who was trying to catch her breath. Even though Asari processed superior endurance then unaugmented humans, Liyet still struggled to keep up with Delta Team in their armor at times.
“Focus Liyet,” said Commander Hamm. While this was a normal phrase for the Commander to say, Liyet notice that its wasn’t said with the same annoyance from the past. She felt that she was finally earning the Commanders respect.
“Aye skipper,” said Liyet as she walked over to the door and pulled out her TacPad to override the security locks.
“Odd, Lau I haven’t seen code like this,” said Liyet, “this may take longer.”
“I don't think that will be an option Liyet,” said Jacqueline who noticed an increase of Imperial fighters in the area, “it looks like this is their target site too.”
“Lau, let our Forerunner expert handle that lock,” said Hamm realizing the situation may go bad soon, “Get Cortana on the Coms and tell her the situation. Try to get that thing from her to shutdown these Composers.”
Lau nodded and began to contact Blue Team.
“Happy,” said Commander Hamm to Alan, “watch the area.”
“Jack get some charges prepped,” continued Hamm, “we might need to blow this door.”
“Already ahead of you Commander,” said Jacqueline as she walked up to him with two charges, handing him one of them. The two Spartans walked toward the door with the charges, but when they came to the door, it flashed a blue symbol and opened.
“Good, you got it,” said Commander Hamm as he tossed the explosive back to Jacqueline, who quickly put it back into her backpack.
“That wasn’t me Commander,” said Liyet, “when you walked up it flashed the ‘Reclaimer’ symbol and unlocked.”
“Interesting,” replied Hamm who also gave the hand signal to the team to start moving into the building, “but not unheard of.”
“True, but this place is so different,” said Liyet who was walking alongside Commander Hamm who was in the middle of the squad. Spartan Alan and Agent Lau where taking point, with Jacqueline and Ava securing the rear.
“Is that why you are having some difficulty here,” said Commander Hamm on Liyet’s comment.
“Yes, most of my hacking abilities were developed from my...archeology expeditions,” said Liyet, “this place is so different, it’s like starting all over again.”
“You mean treasure hunting,”
“Hey a girl got to make a living, knowledge and enlightenment usually doesn’t pay enough to live on,” commented Liyet, “Unless your a stuffed up porg who lectures to a heard of brainwashed tigrons.”
“Okay, I don’t know what those are,” said Hamm who turned his attention towards Liyet, “so why continue to work with the UNSC and the Republic, we already paid off your debts.”
“Well, the UNSC pays decently for knowledge,” responded Liyet, “plus I did pledge my loyalty for 20 years during my training.”
“Thank you,” said Commander Hamm.
“For what Commander?”
“For sticking around,” said Commander Hamm knowing that she could have run off to work independently at anytime.
“This place is so different,” said Lau commenting on the symbols on the wall, “ did you noticoutside that structures are like nothing we have seen before.”
“You mean the large circular rings on the buildings,” responded Alan Willmore, “do you think it has something to do with the Domain?”
“Maybe, but look at the subtle differences on some of the buildings when we get out of this one,” continued Lau, “it’s like it was built by a different civilizations. The subtle changes are similar on how the Covenant copied the Forerunners.”
“Are you saying that the Forerunner copied their technology from another civilization,” asked Alan.
“Or stole it, we know very little about the Forerunner's history outside of the war with the Flood,” commented Lau,
The team finally came to a large door that appeared to lead into a large chamber.
“This must be it,” said Liyet as she jogged towards to holo interface.
“Can you open it, or do you need my presence of awesomeness to open it,” joked Commander Hamm.
“No,” said Liyet, “I understand this type of interface.”
“Maybe the Forerunner didn’t build all of this place,” said Alan as the large door opened.
The door opened to reveal a large cavernous room with a semi-transparent walkway to the middle. In the middle floated a large obelisk shape pillar..
“That’s it,” said Commander Hamm to Agent Lau, “you got that program, right?”
“Yes, I’ll deploy it,” said Agent Lau.
“Oh, good Reclaimers,” said an unknown female voice from above.
The team looked above to see a Forerunner Monitor floating down from above and coming to a stop in front of the team.
“Standby down,” said Commander Hamm.
“Are you here to explain the anomaly with the Reclaimers that are infected with the parasite ,” asked the Monitor,
“Yes, but first, who are your and what is your function at this installation,” asked Commander Hamm.
“I am 031 Exuberant Witness, Monitor of this Installation,” replied the Monitor, “Genesis, one of the gateways to the Domain and creator of many of the seed worlds.”
“Seed worlds,” asked Spartan Cephon, “What are those?”
“Oh, everyone knows what Seed Worlds are..,” replied Liyet, not really knowing herself, “Who are you?”
“You don't know either do you,” said Ava calling Liyet's bluff.
“No,” said Liyet.
Commander Roy Hamm and Alan Willmore both looked at Liyet, then Alan spoke up, “What type of Forerunner expert are you?”
“No one really is a expert on the Forerunner,” replied Liyet with a little bit of sass, “Mostly everything is a mystery, plus we all have specialties in the field.”
“What's your specialist,” asked Ava.
Stunned by the sudden question, hoping that her response would have changed the subject, Liyet began to stumble over what to say next. Somewhat to her relief Commander Hamm responded with, “Treasure, she is an expert in treasure.”
“Not exactly how I would have put it Commander,” responded Liyet to Spartan Hamm's blunt response.
“What would you have wanted me to say,” said Hamm.
“Something that doesn't make me sound like some sort of tomb robbing mercenary,” said Liyet.
“But you are,” responded Alan.
“I also have a focus on the on the events that reseed our galaxy after the firing of the Halo Arrays,” replied Liyet.
“Ah,” said Alan with some confusion, “That kinda sounds like you would know what a seed world would be.”
“Actually it's kinda complicated,” started to reply Liyet, “the Forerunner kinda just use the word like everyone knows what it means...”
“Yeah, they are kinda pretentious about that,” replied Hamm.
“Well, we have guesses what it is, but we really don't know,” said Liyet.
Ava interrupted, “Well we do have a Monitor right here, why don't you ask?”
Realizing the opportunity that was right in front of her, Liyet asked, “What exactly are Seed Worlds.”
“Really,” said the Exuberant Witness looking at each of the people that were in the room, surprised that they would ask the question, “Seed Worlds are the artificial planting of a society, thankfully we were able to use the original origin world for many species, but we did have to adjust many due to changing conditions, especially when I received the update. After the update, a large number of species had to be placed in alternate locations to the best of my ability. Due to the lack of genetic material though, I had to start mostly start from scratch, but used other species as the primary template.”
“Update,” questioned Lau, “What update exactly?”
“Since the Domain was mostly cut off from the Ecumene, we didn't receive all the information for reseeding the galaxy,” replied the Exuberant Witness, “Thankfully, about five-hundred Earth years ago, I was able to receive some information via link with Erde-Tyrene.”
“Five-Hundred years,” said Lau to Liyet, “ONI has some theories that your species and quite a few others, are only five-hundred years old. Doesn't that also kinda fit your theories too?”
“Yes they do,” said Liyet, “Am I actually right?”
“Unfortunately, the information was very incomplete and contained a large amount of inconsistencies, and required a large deal of adjustments and interpolations,” continued Exuberant, “While I think my creators would not have exactly been pleased this the results, I think they would have been content by my decision making process to keep the balance within acceptable parameters.”
“What is she talking about,” said Commander Hamm.
“Exuberant,” asked Lau, “Were any of these species, Krogan and Turian?”
“Yes,” said Exuberant, “While I was able to keep their physical appearance relatively the same, I had to make quite a few adjustments to their biology to make them a viable species. Additionally their current societal path would have created an imbalance in the galaxy, so I took the liberty to place geas to make sure they followed a more balanced path.”
“Would that have anything to do with the Klingon Empire,” asked Commander Hamm realizing what was going on.
“Partially,” replied Exuberant, “unfortunately the the physiology was not viable, but I tried to preserve their arts and visual appeal, as to survive through the Turians.”
“Lau,” said Commander Hamm with a tone of annoyance, “Is this what I think it is?”
“I believe so,” said Lau to Hamm, “this sounds like confirmation with one of the theories from ONI.”
“What was that,” asked Ava who wasn't aware of ONI's investigation and theories on the subject.
“As you know we have been encountering a large number of species in the Perseus Arm since the discovery of several high efficiency slipstream routes that lets us cross into several regions of within a week or a few days depending on the ship,” explained Lau.
“Yes, and some of those species have been vaguely similar to some of Earth's literature and entertainment from the past,” confirmed Ava.
“Yes, like those found in Mass Effect and Star Wars,” added Alan Willmore, “from around five-hundred years from now.”
“Oh, you are familiar with the names of the archives,” said Exuberant enthusiastically.
“Wait, are you saying..,” started Ava.
“One of the Forerunners Monitors that was in charged of reseeding of the galaxy,” explained Hamm, “mistaken our entertainment as the real thing.”
“Excuse me,” interrupted Exuberant.
“Hate to break it to you light bulb,” said Commander Hamm, knowing what the Monitor was going to ask, “Your update was nothing but a work of fiction made by humans several hundred years ago, you definitely pulled an Explores and Galaxy Quest there, just on galactic scale.”
“Oh no,” said Exuberant, “This is not good at all. It is impossible to correct this now, not without committing mass genocide.”
“Yeah, that would be bad,” said Alan, “Don't worry about it, too late to do anything now.”
“Right now we have another problem,” said Hamm “upload the shutdown protocol for the Composers.”
“Aye,” said Lau as he walked over to the Composer's control panel.
“Does this have to do with the other Reclaimers that are infected by the parasite,” asked Exuberant, “Due to their infection of the parasite, the Installation will limit their access.”
“That's probably for the best,” said Commander Hamm, “They are from a separate human faction, known as the Septagon Empire. Short story, they intentionally infect their people with the virus.”
“That is quite disturbing, would you like me to further restrict their access,” asked Exuberant, “I can alert the Warden Eternal to assist with this.”
“That would be wonderful,” said Alan, “Hopefully it will be able to slow down the Didact too.”
“The Ur-Didact,” said the Monitor with a worried tone in its voice, “He wasn't suppose to be awaken for awhile, his meditation cannot be completed by now.”
“Yeah, he is cranky as gos se,” said Alan, “seems to have a real grudge against humans.”
“And he has those annoying sons too,” said Hamm.
“Oh, this is not good,” said Exuberant, “Warden Eternal will most likely side with the Didact and his forces if he comes here.”
Exuberant began to pace about the room, accessing the Installation systems, “He is already here, there appears to be a space battle up above us right now.”
“We need to do something,” said Exuberant panicking about the current situation.
“Don't worry, that's why we are here,” said Commander Hamm as he nodded to Agent Lau.
“We are going to shutdown the Composer network connection to the Domain,” said Alan.
“Oh, good,” said Exuberant calming down a little, “that will greatly weaken his forces, but we will not be able to hold this world. Either the Didact or the Empire will take this world, I will not be able to fight them off.”
“Doesn't this place have a security system,” asked Ava.
“It does, but those systems fall under the responsibility of the Warden,” explained Exuberant,”And he will surely side with the Didact.”
“He is not fond of humanity either,” said Exuberant directly to Commander Hamm.
“It will take fifteen minutes for me to do the shutdown,” said Lau.
The sounds of Imperial aircraft could be heard above the facility as their Ion engines screamed ahead. The rumble of fighters and troop crafts could be heard approaching Delta Team's location.
“I can use the Installation's transportation grid to get us out of here if needed,” said Exuberant.
“Good, we have an escape plan,” said Commander Hamm as his hardlight armor deployed around his arm, “We just need hold this place for a few minutes.”
