The construction of St. Mary's began in 1855. The cornerstone was laid on August 19 and the interior was completed a year later. The Pastor of St. Ignatius in Hickory, Maryland, Rev. J. A. Walter, officiated on the occasion and was assisted by William Street, a student of St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore.
