After allowing the colt to run off, Halo and Marie-Jane continue their pursuit of the Kelpie mare.
Up ahead, Halo could see that the shallow channel of water broadened out into a large body of deeper water and there the mare had more chance of getting away. She urged Marie-Jane as close as she could get to the Kelpie and just as the mare was about to jump into the deep water, Halo made her move.
Getting hold of her spare halter, Halo jumped from Marie-Jane and landed on the Kelpie's back. The mare screamed as she dives into the deep water with Halo on her back. Halo managed to get a hold of the mare's mane and hold onto her as she surfaced. The Kelpie shrieked and struggled in the water, thrashing as she desperately tried to get Halo off her.
Halo knew that for the moment that all she could do was hang on and wait for the mare to tire, but at the same time, she could talk and try to get her to calm down.
"Easy, easy! It's alright, girl, I'm not going to hurt you! It's alright!"
The mare didn't respond at first and though eventually Halo's words seemed to be getting through, she didn't stop fighting. Halo kept holding on as tight as she could until she felt the mare beginning to tire. She didn't know how much time had gone by, but she knew it had been a while.
Halo strokes the mare's beautiful neck and tried to soothe her, whispering comforting words so as not to scare her even more.
"It's alright, girl, it's alright. I know your scared and you have every right to be, but no one is going to hurt you."
The Kelpie mare was panting hard and trembling lightly, but very slowly she began to calm down enough for Halo to slip the basic halter over her face. Carefully, Halo managed to lead the Kelpie mare towards the shallow water and Marie-Jane. Once back in the shallow water, Halo stroked the Kelpie mare's neck and checked her for any injuries and once satisfied, she gave the mare some more time to recover from the tussle.
Halo waited to see if the Kelpie would fight again, but the mare seemed to be done with resisting and had submitted. Halo patted the mare's neck again and, holding the reigns of the halter, she got back on Marie-Jane and the pair began heading back to EH stables with their catch.
The Kelpie mare followed peacefully.
