Description This is from a series of studies I made for an art course. We were supposed to be working with the theme of faces, but I was more interested in some of the ancient patterns I discovered and the next few pages in my sketchbook revolve around them. The original drawing is pencil on paper, but once scanned and darkened it brought out all the faint smudges and marks that the eye ignores.

The reference for this was a photograph of a tiny ivory head which only measures 1.5 inches in length. I cannot remember where it was discovered, but (from memory) it is believed to be a religious item, an amulet or votive item representing the Great Mother Goddess and as such is similar to  'Venus' figurines.
