It's actually kinda weird when you think about it.
The graphics suck. The bugs are infinite. There's no goal.
The game is... fun.

Both those ideas would pull up some popularity and hook some people. But then it'd be a big name... not just a secret between you and me, y'know? It'd almost ruin some of the charm. Mods are also aplenty so the goal might be easy to achieve, heading off a useless update basically. That's just me personally.

I haven't found that many bugs until now (OK, I admit I started digging yesterday) but I think it's already showing side effects.
Like waking up in the middle of the night with plans in my head to build a tower with boatdock in a grotto, fields for crops somewhere on the higher levels and some traps to get rid of these pesky creepers...

its just pure fun-ness. but in a video-game industry dominated by FPSs, Survival/Sandbox/Creative games are losing popularity, but this game's awesomeness is a representation of a triumphant last stand of a dying game genre
