"Is this... " his voice trailed away. Slowly, as if he were dealing with a wild animal, Remus reached out and brushed her cheek with his fingertips. He smiled, uncertain, and began again.
"Nymphadora, is this your true face?"
"I told you to never call me Nymphadora," she protested, as she always did. But her heart wasn't in it. It was funny, but no one had ever thought to ask her that.
He cupped her face gently with the palm of his hand, his thumb caressing her cheekbone. "I don't really care, you know. I love you no matter what you look like."
As if to prove it, he leaned in and kissed her. It was gentle, with no demands, not asking her to do or be anything but herself.
It was the first time she felt completely comfortable in her own skin.
