I was thinking about my concept for a jrpg otome game recently. I liked the general idea, but I was unsure as to how to proceed with the worldbuilding for it. Would it be in the same universe as Joe Maverick, or separate? Even if it were separate, I wanted them to relate somehow. Then I thought, why not just have the protagonist be Joe's daughter? I don't have to do too much additional worldbuilding, and it could work as a spinoff series. So I drafted this design for her. Yeah her name is Jane, every girl I make is Jane. Though in Joe's case, it makes sense because his son's name is John. So woop, Joe has a daughter now. Originally I was just going to let him have a son, but this idea seems too good to pass up. Writing the Joe's reaction to the man Jane chooses to date is an interesting thought.I still want to use the general premise of the Four Holy Beasts from chinese mythology as the main theme for the plot. I figure, if the protagonist has Joe as her dad (who was prophesized in legend) it makes sense for her to end up in a mystical sort of story. Gameplay wise, it'd still be a jrpg, but you'd be able to date guys too. Or maybe just one guy. I'm debating on having multiple options. On one hand, variety is good. But on the other, I really want to have a canonical relationship. So I feel that players that prefer one of the non-cannon routes wouldn't be too happy with it. I also haven't really seen a game where you only have one romance option in a long time... so it may stand out some. Really, even in otome games I always have one guy that I prefer. So yeah. I'm thinking that if there's just one option, you'll have the option to date him or not. So if you're interested in romance you can have it, but if you just want to play a jrpg you can do that too. Regardless, the jrpg portion will definitely be the main focus. I really loved how the romance/battle ratio was handled in Persona 3, so I'm going to work to emulate that.
I maaaaay make this game next as opposed to Joe Maverick 2. Why? Because it's much simpler. JM2 takes place in a future setting, so I'm going to do a lot of UI redesign for a more cyberpunk feel rather than medieval. Plus, it'll have a smaller main cast. JM2 has 8 characters for the main party (Mr. Al is one of them) whereas this one would have four at most. I think it'd be a nice coding exercise that I could complete in a few months. I already have the code (chemistry system, jrpg battle system) so I'd just have to make assets, pretty much. JM2 would have new additional features that I'd have to code and add, so yeah. I'm percolating my pecans about it while I'm at work. I kinda sorta already have a design in mind for the main guy as well, so I may post.
