██████ BACKGROUND

PERSONALITY:

    [+] : determined | patient | adaptable | loyal

[=] : dauntless | calm | independent | curious | perceptive

[—] : stubborn | blunt | distrustful | childish

determined: Shinju knows what she wants and she will do what she must in order to achieve her goals. She is definitely willing to bend the rules to achieve this
patient: Given how frustrating it was for her to learn how to read for the first time as a child, she's grown used to taking her time and waiting for things to come together on their own. She knows it will happen, sooner or later, and she's become very good at playing the waiting game. That isn't to say that patience has no limit though - and she has absolutely no patience for bullying in any way
adaptable: In figuring out how to get around with her lack of sight, she's learnt to be quick and change to her surroundings. She's used to using her gymnastics and quick thinking to get out of sticky situations
loyal: If you have proven yourself to be an ally, she will defend and help you in some shape or form. She is very kind, more forgiving, and generous to you than a total stranger, and after her history of bullying, gaining this is no small feat

dauntless: Most definitely she is a risk taker. She wants the feeling of the adrenaline rushing through her, and the thrill of something that can be possibly dangerous
calm: For the most part, there isn't much that can faze her - this stems partially from her bullying, and partially from her lack of visible sight. She likes to stay level-headed as she understands being frantic won't help her
independent: Being home alone a lot due to her parent's job, she became very self-reliant, learning how to cook, clean, and take care of herself and her brother on her own so her parents wouldn't burdened by the chores when they got home. She's used to figuring out things on her own without others helping her
curious: There is plenty of things that Shinju isn't familiar with, and she wants to know about them all. Not for the sake of pure curiosity, but also for understanding how she could use it to her possible advantage
perceptive: Over time, Shinju developed a keen sense of awareness around her, trying to catch things others might miss, whether it be through words or body language, or just what's happening around her - not many are aware of this trait from how she acts though

stubborn: Tell she can't do something? She won't accept it. She doesn't like the idea that she's useless for one reason or another, especially if the excuse is her vision. While she understands her limitations and weaknesses are a real concept that could detrimental in a bad situation, being told she can't do   something, even if it is a legitimate, understanding reason puts her on edge and rebellious as a result to prove herself
blunt: For all that she does to keep herself a mystery, she is very straight forward in telling people her opinion of them, to the point of being called rude. As long as it's not about herself, she will blurt it out with little filter on the subject at hand. She's gotten yelled for this a number of times in middle school, but she'd rather not be the 'meek blind girl' everyone assumed growing up (not that she remembers the bullies)
distrustful: For every person she meets, she always has a nagging feeling that stops her from believing many are her friend. She needs people to prove themselves that they won't betray her, and the fact that she is dealing with people from other gangs not her own? Much harder to gain then it was already. She may call you a friend, but it doesn't mean that she means it
childish: She just wants to have fun, and as such, likes to treat everything like a game. Fights, thieving, the black market, music - you name it, she'll make it a game. It's hard for her to treat many things seriously and she is aware of it, but refuses to change it, since she doesn't want to be bored

           HISTORY:

tl-dr: Normal family life, was born blind, bullied all her school life from it and had no friends, making her bitter at the end of high school. Went to college and got bored, learning to make her own music. Wanted to spread it for everyone to hear, starting with small stores into bigger stores and events to hack in and blast her music, and escape right after. She got caught and convicted from false relations to a thief group and sent to Lethe. Was okay at first at Lethe and soon got bored and found dance offs, immersing herself in them and sneaking around until she got noticed by a Flash Tango member and persuaded her to want to join the gang.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Shinju was brought up in a normal family - she had her parents and a little brother, and they lived a happy little life for her early years. She was born with horrible sight that made it impossible for her to see, so she relied on braille and text-to-speech technology to learn, and learned to use something akin to echolocation to get around with ease. Her family was unconditional in their love for her and happily accommodated for her, even allowing her to go take gymnastics and dance classes when she proved herself able to take them on without many issues. Her dad was a police officer and worked a lot, and her mom was a company consultant that travelled a lot, so she learned to take care of herself and her infant brother at a young age. She knew they loved her and her brother, and it was because they were gone for so long - it made all the time she spent with them even more precious. She would spent hours on the phone, talking to them when they couldn’t come home until late, Spanish with her mom, Japanese with her dad, to develop her fluency in them, and English when she wasn’t at home.

When she was starting school, she ended up in a normal school with a specialist to help her education rather than a specialized school for the blind since her family couldn't afford the costs of moving and finding a new job. The fact that she was blind got her coddled by teachers and a target for bullies - she hated it. Nothing she could do would change their opinions of them. When she tried to offer help in subjects she was decent at? The book was thrown at her face. Someone was hungry and she had a spare snack? She was attacked with water bottles at recess and came home soaked. Her seemingly endless patience for them was wearing thin, but the final straw was when she was walking home with her brother one day after school - they cornered her and made her brother watch them beat her up, ruin her hair, and scarred her back and wrist with the plastic knives they swiped from their classroom. She had turned 9 years old and her mom sent a cake to her and classmates to celebrate it.

She was sent to the hospital, both her and her brother were transferred to a new school, and the whole experience turned her jaded at the prospect of having friends. She only had her brother as her friend, maybe his friends when they came over to play at their house, but otherwise, she had a lonely, and bored, life in school. When she was better, her dad decided to add self defense to hers and her brother’s activities. She focused solely on her gymnastics, dance, self defense, and schooling to get a decent GPA out of it. Any attempts at trying to be her friend was met with bitter distrust, and bullies trying to get a rise out of her would leave with just as many bruises as they left on her. At least she knew she could take care of herself now when she absolutely had to.

When she graduated from high school, she attended college to become an interpreter - it was one of the few things that didn't relate to her athletic interests, and it would make her in demand. She grew up listening and speaking 3 different languages, so she knew that she could apply them into a good job, even if it wasn't the most exciting job she could find. She thought she could persevere through it and obtain a diploma and be done with it, but she grew incessantly bored with the schoolwork and professors, and in her boredom, she turned to the internet to look for her favourite artists and songs.

Music always gave a boost to her mood, and got her moving to try and make her own choreography when she had the free time. At the end of a new song, she listened about some software that would allow her to make her own songs by the artist, and her interest peaked, took a look at it and played around with a trial version for a few days before outright buying it. She immersed herself in videos and tutorials on learning music, music theory, and the software to understand how to compose music, since she hardly knew music beyond what was taught in elementary school, and she never touched an instrument in her life. She worked with classical sounds at the start before moving into her favoured genres of electro dance, hip hop, and beatbreak. They weren’t very spectacular, but she put a lot of effort and heart into them, and made them special to her.

She started to make her own songs and post them on the internet, gaining a few followers for her work, but not much else. But for her, this was the most fun she had in what felt like forever. She tried to get more followers, listened to her more outside more often to catch people's attention, but she wanted to do more with it. She wanted more people to listen to her work, show how much fun she had with this and that other should have just as much fun as she did making it!

So she started with simple things. She hid an old speaker in a convenience store and blast her music in there to overpower the boring music. She got immediately caught for it, but she was able to easily get away before police even came or the store owner saw her face to give to police. It was a small thing that was overlooked, but for Shinju, she felt energized by the whole ordeal. The race to get away in time, even if she had plenty of time to get away in the first place, and the thrill - she wanted more.

She started going bigger, using not just her own music, but anything that she thought had a good beat. Bigger stores, bigger events, she would invade, change the music to something she thought was better, and get away just as fast. She thrived on the adrenaline, and hid it perfectly from her family. When she dyed her hair blue, she simply told her family that she lost a dare with some freshmen, not a voluntary choice to continue masking her identity. But she didn't realize she had a pattern when she escaped. More and more officers were seeing her escape, more videos were recorded, and they were able to determine the next place she would hit, where they caught her in the middle of her escape, by her dad no less who was on patrol at the time.

At first, she thought it was going to be fine, she was just changing music in stores that could easily be fixed, nothing big or lasting. Maybe serve a lot of community service, and deal with a very disappointed family, but nothing else. That was not the case for her. Apparently her patterns matched with a local group of thieves who would come in for money and high value items right after she left, and got them to believe that she was a member of the gang as she served as the distraction and bait. She refused the accusations, trying to tell them that she had no relation to whatever group was doing this and that they must have been using her patterns to their advantage, but a previously caught thief of the group threw her under the bus, making them sound all buddy-buddy and that she was a liar. With her lack of social life, she had no one to back her up and her claims, and found guilty for more than she committed, and sent straight to Lethe.

With her memories gone, she was more of a blank slate - she held no ill will towards the guards, she wasn't inclined to find her talents and skills, she was to relearn her echolocation to get around better, and her outward bitterness to people was gone. She as taken by the chef and kitchen-related workshops and quietly worked to try and get out Lethe as a budding chef. But after a while, the monotony of her life here started to bore her. She enjoyed learning to cook, but she wanted a bit more spice in her life. So, she started changing her normal paths, travelling to areas that were darker and seedier than the rest of Lethe, and found herself at dance off. She loved the loud music, the thumping and the voices and quick movements she could see through the echos, and getting lost in it, found herself getting into the dance off herself. And she felt alive. The energy was back in her and found a bunch of cool people who got her more info on them, and she sought them out more and more, sneaking in and out of where she shouldn't be for them and danced and danced and danced. Sure, she got into a few fights here and there, but it was nothing that the guards found, so no harm, no foul for her. It felt so natural to her, and the freedom and thrill of it was worth so much more to her.

She heard of rumours about the gangs, from these dance offs. She heard about what they did, what they can do, how they were able to remember. To remember was something she had thought about, definitely wondered what it was she did to land her here in the first place, but she wasn't 100% convinced. Then, during one of the dance offs, a member of the Flash Tango gang came up to her and asked about her talents, got her to try and steal a few things, which she was successful at. When she proved herself to be competent, she learned about Flash Tango from this member, what they stood for and did. And she was hooked. She immediately put herself down for Flash Tango, not even thinking about what the other gangs may have and provide. She wanted to join Flash Tango, and feel the thrill of getting into whatever trouble they had. The memories were secondary, she wanted to have fun.
