Eliza snapped her helmet on before grabbing Lottie's reins. The plucky Appaloosa mare was all set for her show debut, and Eliza wanted to get her and their other horses out for a warmup before the arena got too crowded. She'd made sure to brush Lottie so she was nice and clean, although she wasn't at all convinced that all of those white spots would actually stay white for long.
It was a short walk to the indoor arena, and Eliza was glad to see that her horses were some of the first ones there. Naomi had just gotten up on Rook, who was the only one of their horses here who had actually shown before. The mare was well-behaved and stood patiently before Naomi cued her forward.
Bonfire was a different story. While not insanely jumpy or energetic, he really didn't like to stand still for long, so lining him up at the mounting block was proving to be a challenge for Cate.
"Bonfire," she grumbled, "I swear, if you don't stand still . . ."
"Want some help?" Eliza offered.
"Let me give a few more tries. If he still won't stand still, then yes."
Finally, after a few more minutes of dancing around, Bonfire settled for about two seconds, which was just long enough for Cate to get a foot in the stirrup and swing up. The young stallion was all too eager to get going after that, starting off at a walk that was about two steps away from a trot.
Lottie stood nicely for Eliza, although she could see that the mare was very ready to go. She mounted quickly and gathered up the reins, keeping Lottie at a controlled walk when she started. Ahead of her, Cate had kept Bonfire to a peppy walk, and Rook was loping nicely for Naomi across the ring.
All right, Eliza thought, let's get this show on the road.

An extra piece for CowboyGFRS07 's show. I titled this "Snowflakes and Fire" because two of the horses are snowflake appaloosas, and the other horse is named Bonfire.
Bonfire's behavior here is pretty close to how my one lesson horse behaves - you're fine once you're actually in the saddle, but the transition from ground to horse is made a bit more complicated by the fact that she does not like to stand still for long. I never mount her without someone standing at her head, because I'm not convinced at all that she'd actually stand still for just me. And I think she'd be even less likely to hold still if I was mounting from the ground (which I almost never do anyway, because I'm barely flexible enough to get my foot in the stirrup from the ground, but still).
