Edith is Alistair's coach. She was rescued by him in Bournemouth in 1945, during an air raid attack, and has stayed by his side ever since. When Alistair is on passenger duty, she will always accompany him and is polite and respectful to the people who board her. She’s been nicknamed 'The Duchess' by her passengers, due to her immaculate, royal seeming appearance - a name that she has grown rather fond of.

Edith has taken on a grandmotherly role to engines of the Other Other Railway. She affectionately refers to the troublesome trucks and the tank engines as her 'children', which they all love and appreciate. She is full of wisdom, somewhat stern, caring, an an understanding old coach, who just wants the best for her cute little children in Barrow.
