This is a diagram of the crossbow-based small arms systems used in the AEGIS webcomic. Of course, the comic world presents a much larger variety; i only chose 2 small arms designs for this diagram.

In the world the comic takes place in (called Mylur), the civilizations never prioritized gunpowder or combustion-based projectiles. Instead, they used crossbows and advanced its design to what is displayed here.

I'll draw up another diagram that shows how exactly this works (i'm not claiming this works for sure with real-life physics)
