Description
This little scene takes place the following morning. . .right after Gru took the girls in for good.
The excitement over being back with Gru, had the girls up very early. They couldn’t sleep, and neither could he. So he decided to make them another batch of pancakes, like he had done the day before all the mayhem happened.
As the three of them sat at the kitchen booth/table, Margo watched as he flipped a pancake a little too high.
“Whoooa. . .Dat almost hit de ceiling didn’t it?”
As they giggled, Margo shook her head and replied,
“I still can’t believe we’re really here for good. ”
Giving her a look of deep regard, Gru smiled and said,
“You should’ve never left in de furst place.” He replied, as she smiled at him. “But dat was my own fault. . .” Now he noticed the way Edith looked away, and began fumbling with her napkin on the table.
“I-I thought it was because of me. . .”
Rather surprised, Gru looked down at her and asked, “Now why in de wourld would you say dat?” Edith didn’t answer him, but instead looked toward Margo.
Beginning to sense something more, Gru turned impatient. “Well?”
Rather awkwardly, Margo looked up at him and replied, “Cause Miss Hattie told Edith she’d never get adopted. . .” At first Gru was so surprised that he could only gape down at Edith, watching as she now scooted back in the booth and folded her arms. “What?”
“It’s true. . .Cause she’s so bad. . .” Margo said, as Edith’s head sank low.
By then Gru was so stunned, that he actually turned the fire off on the stove and set the pan to the side. Scoffing, he flung a hand on his hip. “So what! Eef dat was de case, my mom would’ve kicked me out a long time ago!” He barked, as Edith silently stared down at the table. “I can’t believe she said dat!”
Feeling for her sister, Margo sadly replied, “It’s true. . .And it’s not the first time, either.”
“Well den, I guess we showed her, didn’t we?” Gru firmly stated, as Edith looked up at him rather surprised. “Cause you’re here. . .and you’re not going anywhere!”
Now he could see the hurt look flash in her blue eyes. As he watched, Edith then tugged down on her wool cap, and put her head down. Already knowing her routine, Gru knelt down to her level. Tugging back up on her cap, he reached out until his hand gripped the underneath of her chin. Gently he tilted her head up, until her tearful gaze met his reassuring one. “Understand?” He asked, as her bottom lip began to quiver. Fighting with all she had not to cry, Edith nodded, then hesitated just a bit. Having gotten his first real hug from Margo, the night before. . . Gru knew what she wanted, and eagerly met her halfway. Embracing her tightly with a hug that was just as reassuring to her. . .as it was to him.
The End
I'm sure without a doubt that Edith being told that she'd never get adopted, would scar her somehow. So imagine how bad Gru would feel. . .when he'd find out about that. And how angry he'd get with Miss Hattie cause. . .she should know better.
For me this little story was so moving. . .that as usual, I had to illustrate. So. . .I thought I'd give you a double shot. The story. . .and the illustration together.
I hope this moved you guys. And makes ya love Gru, and wanna hug Edith!
Thanks for all the support!
