All Hallow's Eve Cleaning,It was all Hallows Eve. Rain battered the windows of a large, Victorian-styled manor. Thunder illuminated the dark sky. However, inside the walls the candlelit home was warm. The historic building was built without most modern comforts like air conditioning and electricity was limited. While a few lamps were in the rooms, a maid wandered the halls lighting many candles to fill the house with soft light. The maid in question, Andrea, walked through the manor house with her tinderbox as she lit the candles with her feather duster under her arm. She wore a classic, Victorian maid outfit that look like she would be at home in Downton Abbey even though she lived in the twenty first century. Andrea had the candles lit, and her heels clacked as she walked to the kitchen to prepare her Mistress’ evening tea and cakes.,While Andrea liked to wear long dresses, she would have rather not wear heels since she walked so much. However, her employer paid very good money to follow a few specific guidelines: 1.) Dress properly whilst on duty.2.) No cell phone usage whilst on duty.3.) Do not speak unless spoken to, and when spoken to always curtsy and say “Yes Mistress” or “No Mistress”.4.) Never invite anyone to the Manor.5.) Clean the rooms but do not touch anything of value.Andrea didn't know why her employer, whom she called Mistress, lived in a manor house that looked more like a museum than a mansion. The middle-aged woman carried herself with an aristocratic air. She would talk about a husband but Andrea only ever saw her in the house. Andrea had never seen someone with gray eyes before, and she kept a voluptuous head of raven black hair that looked natural. Andrea wasn't surprised that she had trouble keeping somebody because she wanted them to basically role play as a servant from 100 years ago. However, Andrea was less bothered by these rules because it was fun to role play in a sense. Not to mention the fact that the paycheck would assuage most concerns. Andrea even preferred not to use her phone, as now she had an excuse not to answer. After the first month of cleaning and doing laundry and serving the lady tea, Andrea could feel the stony facade crack a wee bit and the lady opened ever so slightly. No life details of course, there was the professional distance. Andrea had never even learned her Mistress’ name yet! The Mistress just softened her tone a tad, and even offered small favors such as letting Andrea take leftover food home.Andrea arranged the teapot of Ceylon or Earl Grey tea, teacups, and saucers on the tray with a bowl of sugar cubes as well. She carried the tray through the manor from the kitchen to the library with her feather duster under her arm. The place was decorated with ornate furniture, vases, and paintings. One could only imagine who painted these works. Some are beautiful and others had a haunting quality to them like the classic eyes feeling like they were following you or they were so life like, it was almost like they were watching you especially on a spooky October night like this. It reminded Andrea of when she watched her brother play Resident Evil and the mansion in that game, though without zombies thankfully. The West Wing was the living quarters for the inhabitants of the house and their fancies like the libraries, art galleries, and gardens. The East Wing contained the servants’ quarters and facilities like the kitchen, though it had a few points of contact between the two like the dining room. Therefore, Andrea crossed from the East Wing to the West Wing. She placed the feather duster on a cabinet outside of the library. She took a deep breath to get into character before she entered.Andrea walked to the library to see her Mistress who sat by a fire. Andrea placed the tray on a table beside the Mistress. Her Mistress carried an aura of a socialite from that era and haughtiness of Cruella de Vil, cigarette holder included. She smoked from her right hand as she held a book in her left. She sat in an ornate chair with velvet cushions and clawed feet. She sat in on a chair and she seemed to enjoy the music of the storm outside mixed with the fire.,The Mistress dressed like she was in a play, or as if she walked out of the 1920s and 30s. Andrea never saw her in less than a dress and full make-up. She wore all black. A black dress adorned her body, a black feather boa, and black opera gloves that doubled as smoking gloves. She wore a hose over her legs that led into high heels. With Andrea’s task complete, she curtsied and turned to leave. She glanced over to Andrea and spoke with a transatlantic accent, “Maid.”Andrea stopped and turned back so she could curtsy, “Yes Mistress.” The Mistress set her book and cigarette aside made herself a cup of tea, “You have been a respectable servant this past month. Most who I employed have not made it to this point, so I congratulate you.”Andrea curtsied and tried not to smile too broadly at the congratulations. “Thank you, Mistress.”The Mistress took a sip and enjoyed the cup, “Dust the Trophy Room and then you may go. Although, what's the ghastly weather persist you have my permission to stay in the kitchen quarters.”Andrea curtsied and took a demure stance her hands together in front of her, “Yes Mistress, I will inform you if I stay the night. If I may, could I ask Mistress a question?”She was surprised by the request, but nodded, “You may.”"Why is it called the Trophy Room, Mistress?" Andrea asked, since that particular room she wouldn’t call a Trophy Room. It was full of things such as suits of armor, weapons, and exhibitions of various artifacts like a museum. The Mistress sighed as she picked back up her cigarette, tapped off some ash from the tip, and smoked it. "My husband likes to collect beautiful... things. Just like myself." She took a deep breath. "Anyways, don't move any object from that room when you are cleaning. You are dismissed."“Thank you Mistress.” Andrea gave a final curtsy and left the room. She left the library and sighed as she picked up her feather duster to go to complete her final task. She walked down the hallway with several windows that gave a view of the outside storm. While the idea of staying the night in the mansion was not exactly something she was looking forward to, at the same time she cannot imagine driving her car out in the storm. Andrea barely saw 20 feet from these windows. It would be worse in the total darkness of the storms and thick woods that sounded the manor. It's a road that one did not want to be stuck on. Andra’s heels clacked as she hurried through the halls to make it back to the great hall of the main entrance. She was on the rightmost door and to her right was a grand staircase that would go up to the second floor. She ignored the three other doors on the bottom floor and climb the staircase or heels aching slightly from a long day of being a maid, but she soldiered her way through it. When she first started, she had a rough first couple days but after getting Dr Scholl's for her heels her long nights were more bearable. The top floor had an additional four doors and she went to the top right door. This door led into a hallway that had several galleries such as a statuary, a gallery of paintings and stain-glass, and the Trophy Room, that was full of just all sorts of artifacts and knick-knacks from around the world.Andrea entered and the artifacts in the room reminded her for this daunting task: African masks, a golden globe that looks like it was from the 17th century, samurai and knight armor, swords and muskets, and in the middle were smaller displays in cases. Butterflies, small taxidermized animals, and beautiful jewelry such as earrings and a necklace.Andrea steeled herself because she knew that it would be a long dusting but it's not like she had anything better to do so she got to work. She worked from the outside in so she dusted the armor, weapons, and various large objects like the aforementioned globe first. Once she made it to the cases in the middle, Andrea noticed that there was a gap in the glass jewelry case as if it were opened! There was dust inside of the case! Andrea panicked. On one hand, she could report this to the Mistress. On the other hands, she’d have to clean it either way. What if the Mistress thought it was a theft attempt? There were no cameras in the house, so it would be Andrea’s word. She wanted to finish the task, and she needed to open the case to finish it. Maybe she could clean without anything being moved?Well, Andrea needed to open the case to clean it and she never left a job undone. Andrea took a deep breath, and she held it as she slowly opened up the case. She dusted around the ruby and sapphire earrings and golden bracelets, all things that she would find at once beautiful but more than likely cumbersome. Finally, Andrea saw the necklace was in a precarious position. She would have to move it to dust around it.Andrea closed her eyes in frustration. She pondered again if she should just leave it. However, she opened her eyes and bit the bullet. She picked up a necklace to clean around it. She knew this violated the rules, but she would be quick. Andrea held the necklace in one hand while she quickly dusted.Just before she put it back, she beheld the beautiful piece of jewelry. Gold links held rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. The jewels flashed and her fingers tingled! She felt a jolt and dropped the necklace onto the floor! “Ow!” Andrea winced as she sucked where her hand burned like she touched a stove, “Weird…” However, as Andrea sucked on her fingers to dull the burn, she noticed something weird on her hand. White hairs, snow white hairs grew on the back of her hand. They went from strands to a bushel. She stared, mouth agape at the sight. The burning sensation returned to her ears. They felt like someone tugged at them. She rushed to a mirror in the corner of the room and her eyes widened in terror. Her ears were now saucers! White furred grew on her ears just like on her hand. They had migrated to the top of her head and she could not help but notice that they looked distinctly like a… “M…mouse!?” Andrea squeaked in horror at the impossibility of it all.,Things only got worse as Andrea watched on as her ears grew larger! She could hear her own heartbeat as her nose tingled and became distinctly pink. Her fingernails grew longer and she noticed the undeniable fact that both of her hands looked more and more like paws as little animalistic paw pads developed!,Andrea’s nose started to push a bit more outward and she could see the glistening in the light of fine whiskers coming out of the tip of her nose that twitched. The rolling the rumbling thunder made her grip her ears and from the loud noise and her nose stiff more as she started to smell all sorts of things that she never could have possibly before and after. She closed her eyes from the century overload however when she opened them, she noticed that the room seemed larger and her clothes were baggier on her form as she became slowly shorter. At this point, Andrea’s hands were functionally paws as her thumb was uselessly small. Panic gripped her as her new ears twitched and she heard loud footsteps. She turned to see her Mistress standing in the door looking very displeased.Andrea’s large eyes widened as she pleaded, “Please! Mistress help me! I'm… I’m turning into a mouse!”The Mistress looked on with little pity, “I can see that, and I can see the jewelry case opened and a necklace on the floor.”Andrea squeaked rather mouse-like as her clothes got baggier and baggier and her Mistress loomed over her. “Please… you got to help me… I… I don't know what's happening… I… I didn't mean to…”Andrea was starting to strain to talk, her teeth were getting sharper as she got smaller and her voice was definitely more and more higher pitch and squeaky. Andrea squeaked as she felt something slithering out from behind her in her clothes and she reached back with great strain as her arms retooled themselves to only remain forward. A mouse cannot reach behind itself. But she understood, that a tail snuck out from underneath her clothes! The Mistress took a puff of her cigarette, and Andrea covered her nose from the strong smell, “The only reason you would be turning into a mouse is if you try to steal, no one who turns someone into a mouse has any intention of changing them back.”Andrea’s mousy face still conveyed human terror, “No! I swear… I wasn't trying to steal… I cleaned…”Her Mistress’s stone gaze watched as her servant got smaller and smaller and weaker, and Andrea finally sunk into her clothes, her speech turned into jittering unintelligible squeaks. Finally, a white mouse crawled out of the discarded maid uniform.,Her Mistress loomed over her like a giant and the little mouse cowered. The Mistress reached down with a gloved hand. The mouse at first was scared that the gigantic woman was going to squash her, but then she realized that she held it out for her to jump in. So, mouse Andrea jumped in and the Mistress picked her up. It was not only terrifying to be turned into a mouse, but Andrea felt so small and powerless! Also, since she can't talk was she doomed to spend the rest of her days as a mouse!?The Mistress whispered but what would be whispers for a human was loud and clear for the mouse. She ran a finger along the mouse’s back to pet and reassure it, “My little mousy maid, I must confess that while all the evidence points to an attempted theft, at the same time I did appreciate your service you were a good maid.”Mistress’s tone darkened slightly, “Still, I warned you not to remove any of the items in this room and you didn't listen. I will ask my husband if we can undo the transformation.”Mouse Andreas little heart fluttered some, maybe there was hope?"And if we can’t…" the Mistress added coyly, “Don't worry, I will care for you as my new pet. Living in a golden cage can be quite comfortable."Her words hit little mouse Andrea like a ton of bricks and the mouse chittered, terrified as her Mistress carried her close to her chest away from the room and closed the door leaving the maid’s clothes where they lay.“Looks like I need a new maid.” The Mistress mused aloud as she petted the freshly minted mouse that squeaked frantically as if it was trying to speak. However, no one could understand the squeaks of a mouse.
