I have to truely agree with what someone said before. When I first saw this picture I was curious about why there was no title, not even a response from the one that had taken this picture.
But looking at, I mean really LOOKING at it...its the kind of picture that speaks for its self.
There's no color to the background, and the main focus is the ape looking balefully into the camera's lens. It...just has a sad tone to it all....

This Gorilla looks like he's saying, "What the Hell you starin' at? Yeah, I'm locked up in a cage (guesses), and I want outta here!"
Great photo!

This picture made me think of Nabakov. When he was asked what inspired him to write the infamous Lolita, he referred to an article about an experiment he read in a newspaper. The experiment was as follows: A group of scientists tried to teach an ape to draw. When the ape finally draw a picture, it was the bars of his cell.

The body language seems so human. The
way he's leaning against the wall and
side ways glance. How many times in
out lives have we seen that very stance
and look? Amazing. This picture something
in the animal that we could all relate.
Great picture.

Zoos suck and they should all get closed, we have the Discovery channel and the web now, no sense in torturing animals in such a senseless way...

you do know that most animals in zoo's have been rescued in one way or another and would otherwise have been dead, that the ones born there would not survive in the wild and that several species of animals are still around these days because of zoo's and special breeding programs and would be extinct by now..

TheWiress In reply to Talis-Design [2009-11-10 02:59:47 +0000 UTC]
Except if it weren't for humans they would be able to live. And zoos' goals are not to conserve a species, that's a sanctuary's goal. No, a zoos goal is to make money off of caged animals.
Sanctuaries are the ones who conserve the species that would otherwise be dead. Don't even pretend.

Thank you. And it's really sad how ignorant people are when it comes to animals. I'd title this picture "Hopelessness".
People always try to pretend zoos are so great, but really none are. See how that poor gorilla has naught but a cold, stone ground to lay or sit on and people think newspaper will compensate for it. I don't think so.

theres lots of livestock that would have died out if we didnt want to eat them

You are probably talking about most animals in the zoos of CIVILIZED countries. Not the case of mine.
Further more, breeding a specie in a zoo still doesn't count and that specie still existing. 7 red bald eagles left in the world, all in zoos - it's like they don't exist anyhow

My friend just ordered an extremely rare snake, possibly even endangered, over the internet. They post it in the mail, in a brown envelope with "Happy Birthday, Fragile, Glass inside" Written on the envelope.
No Jokes. From USA to South Africa.

Holy crap! Well, I guess the snake was still alive, they're pretty tough bastards! Right?
π: 0 β©: 1
MikeErasmus In reply to Deathpen [2009-11-09 22:31:58 +0000 UTC]
Ye they are. But still. Endangered species and its getting posted around like a commodity. They post them as babies, because when they are very young their skeleton hasn't calcified yet, so they don't get recognized on scanners or X ray machines. Crazy Shit.
