Knights become Cavaliers only if they are adept at horseriding, and handling a lance which works very differently from the usual weapons they are used to - swords and maces.

However, Cavaliers don't always necessarily become Champions. In similar fashion to Crusaders, they have to be blessed by the Light. On top of that, they have to be chosen by the special steed, the Celestial Light.

The Celestial Lights are a special breed of horses blessed by the Gods of Light. They have a physical form for their riders but to everyone else, they are not only spectral but its form is incorporeal. It is actually both physical and incorporeal at the same time, though it is entirely made up of pure light energy. Anyone other than its rider will not be able to touch it and if one dares to try, will be burned and electrocuted by the might of Light. Hence, the affinity between the rider and the Celestial Light is real, and a testimony to the Champion's faith and honor, for the Celestial Light will only select the one who is the purest of heart, mind and might.
