Description
I've made a decision to start focusing on bg's to improve them. This one I used a bunch of refs for. Not totally proud of it, but it's a start.Although the fog had managed to roll in and blot out a good portion of the sun, Suley's nose kept them on track. He was onto something, and she could tell. She gave him most of the rein and allowed him to hunt as he chose while still keeping them on track. Weaving in and out of the needled branches, she was aware suddenly of the crackle of twigs under the footsteps of something large. "Hear that, boy?" she mouthed as silently as possible. Those forwarded ears were confirmation enough. He was almost crawling on his belly, creeping low to avoid detection. Novalie did the same on his back to keep his element of surprise safe. The noise had stopped. Gulping, she felt his muscles tense and knew he was about to spring forward, grasping a handful of pelt to hang on. There was a crash as branches slapped by them before the pair landed clean of the forest and dead ahead was the pale furred rear of a caribou. Checking the reins a few times, Novalie felt Suley lunge into action. It was a few strides before she managed to ask him to stop so she could dismount and allow the hunt to proceed. It was a large bull he was up against, but that didn't even phase the spotted male as he whisked off into the fog with Novalie sprinting behind, hand trained on her knife.

While your trees could use more attention, mostly in tightening up in the shapes -- the rushed feeling and visible strokes of the boughs are unfortunately distracting --- the overall impression and composition here is really strong, especially from a distance. The colour palette you used is really gorgeous and has a lot of visual impact, and your choice for going with that sort of focus/depth of field was an excellent one. It's not an atmosphere that's easy to execute, but you really did a nice job on evoking that almost surreal feeling.
