Hashihime no Uji (The Maiden of Uji Bridge)
Hashihime appears in Murasaki's The Tale of Genji, as well as a Kokinshu poem:
"Upon a narrow grass mat
laying down her robe only
tonight, again -
she must be waiting for me,
Hashihime of Uji."

She is a tale of a woman consumed by jealousy; she prayed to a demigod to turn her into an oni after her husband cheated on her. The demigod understood her desires, and bade her to perform a small ceremony and bathe in the Uji river for twenty-one days. She did as she was told and after twenty-one days was granted her wish. She emerged from the river, transformed, and slew her husband, his lover, and all of his relatives.
People who encountered her in her new form died instantly of fear. From a rough translation of the Heiki Monogatari: "Her every aspect was that of an oni, and all who saw her collapsed, dying of terror at the manifested horror they had seen."
