FAQs:

1. What kind of paper does this use?

90lbs/185g
Letter or A4 size. Scale to printable area (don't try to print them at original image size, because they won't match).

2. Where is the previous V3 package?

Superseded by the V3A31 package, which improves on it in every way. Together with the accessories package, it include a large number of previous and updated parts.

3. What do the version numbers mean?

V1 & V2: Old versions, both handmade. The receivers, barrels, and magazines are unique and incompatible with anything else. Some accessories like sights can be interchanged with other versions. Handguards are also cross-compatible, because versions 1 through 3 use barrels with the same thick diameter. However, the design quality of versions 1 and 2 is very poor, so I don't recommend building them.

V3A2: Handmade V3 lower receiver that only accepts V2 (undersized) magazines.

V3: Current version, digitalized and generally better build quality, although with some notable weaknesses, such as the barrel and stock. If a receiver is labeled V3A3, that means it takes V3 magazines. However, there are some slight differences in V3 magazines, so some may fit better than others. V3 magwell has a retaining bar at the back that holds the magazine in place.

V3A416: Hk416 that uses V3 receiver measurements and magazine system. As the two-tone build shows, the receivers are cross-compatible. The main difference is the way the stock attaches (rear ring, buffer tube, and stock) and the way the barrel attaches (it goes into the upper receiver). The upper receiver also fits together better, but, being an Hk416 upper, it is taller only matches the Hk416 handguard. Overall, this is a much stronger model, but retains the unrealistic V3 magazine system.

V3A31: Same magwell and receiver dimensions, but improved buffer tube and barrel, and more realistic minor details. In short, it's an application of the lessons learned from the V3A416 model back to the standard M4 carbine configuration.

V4: Hypothetical next version, with realistic proportions and mag release. Although some of the current parts can be considered "V4" parts, I have barely started actually making a V4 receiver. The stock and barrel will attach similarly to the V3A416. There is no estimated release date.

Not yet, I prefer to be able to make the markings precise, so thus far I've only used the printed-on colors.

Some people have had success painting these models, but I don't have any good info on what kind of paints to use.

I'm working on this project and I'm going to build the RIS4 handguard but I don't really like the look of the delta ring. I like the look of a monolithic rail and in one of the accessory folders, the 6 inch rail cover, I noticed that you made a version with just what I had in mind. The picture is "coverinst03.jpg" and there appears to be no delta ring separating the upper receiver and handguard making the rail look more-or-less continuous.Β

Is there a simple way to achieve this?Β

I've so far completed the lower receiver and pistol grip along with the upper receiver (I'm working on the bolt right now.) I plan to do the handguard and/or barrel next.Β

Thanks in advance.

That picture shows the Hk416 . Obviously the rails are of the same dimensions.

It's possible to build the 416 upper and put it on another lower, if you've already built one.
However, I must warn you that the 416 upper receiver and handguard are both slightly taller than the regular AR, so it wouldn't be possible to just put the 416 handguard on the AR upper. You'd need to make a 416 upper.

Although the bolt carrier group also differs slightly, the 416 bolt carrier is just a mm or two taller. If you've finished the AR bolt carrier group, though, I think it should fit just fine.

Hoborginc In reply to Jason324 [2016-03-05 16:11:14 +0000 UTC]

There's no point, because they are worse models. They're primitive and fall apart very easily. To re-release them would just confuse people.

Dunno. I'm interested in making an early M16 at some point, so I suppose that upper would fit this role as well.

I'm moving, so I'm afraid this will have to be put on hold. I can't predict an estimated release date, and I have to make the AK-74 first anyway, so it will probably be a while.

Here's one that I found. I can't vouch for its buildability, as it seems it crosses several pages, and it doesn't have any colors. But with some creativity, it can probably be built. The actual shapes are there, at any rate.

This one's a bit structurally weak. The Hk416, though, should do fine. It's much stiffer.

Am I supposed to cut any of these circulated parts i.imgur.com/9kgddsM.jpg (stock ctr, pag 1)? I can't really understand what to do here.... if I don't cut any of those it's difficult to make the "serrated" part, and it seems like the buffer tube in the instructions is different from what is printed :/

Leave them connected at the top circle. Cut them apart in the bottom circle.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hoborginc In reply to HaleZero416 [2015-09-26 00:38:08 +0000 UTC]

Actually it has its weaknesses, especially the stock and the delta ring. If you'd like something sturdier, my Hk416 model is considerably more developed.

HaleZero416 In reply to Hoborginc [2015-09-26 01:18:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, for the stock itself, I took 416's SOPMOD stock and buffer tube. I haven't tried the Hk416 yet, but perhaps I'll make it next time.

Hey Hoborg! We've spoken a bit before... I was wondering.
Is it possible... Sorry, wrong wording. With you, it's all possible. Can you attempt to (or know how to) make a rifle, whether it be a sniper or simply buckshot, with a movable bolt catch assembly? Say, I want to build/design/whatever a Thompson bolt action rifle, and I put a spring in the mag, at the bottom, and in the receive opposing the ejection port. Given the correct internals, would the bolt action ass'y work? Work as in "Bullet goes up in receiver when bolt is pulled back; pulls trigger to reset rifle; spring in receiver pushes out shell when bolt is pulled; spring at bottom of mag pushes new bullet up into receiver; new bullet gets chambered when bolt is pushed back". Do you think it'd work right? If so, could you add that to your request roster?
A little bit of bribery , if you design it all (not make it, just design it), I'll give you $50. It'll be CAD, but it's all I got. If you're American, I'm sorry.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hoborginc In reply to TheLegendaryPaper [2015-09-13 17:25:03 +0000 UTC]

It's possible, but it would be difficult because it would require a claw-like extractor on the bolt. This is a very small part that would need a very small spring. Also, it would require a lot of trial and error to get it to function smoothly. Tacome1942 can do this consistently with a combination of papier-mache and incorporating some metal parts, but I haven't quite reached that level yet.

For now, I have neither the opportunity nor the intention to build something like this. After all, even my simplest papercraft projects are currently at a standstill due to outside pressures. However, I will consider it as a future goal, to be attained several years from now through the natural process of iteration and improvement.

Ah. I see. Well, best of luck with your projects and said pressure! And I appreciate you having thought about it; that means so much to a guy like me who gets ignored so much because of my seemingly irrealistic ideas.
