A cold wind had begun sweeping through the open valley, bringing with it the season's first signs of snowfall. The old stallion Lichen had found himself alone, once again, trudging through the wintry landscape. The weather didn't bother him nearly as much as the loneliness did. Though he saw regular interaction with wandering bachelors like himself, it had been seasons since he had the comforting and constant company of a mare. His last herd, stolen from him by an aggressive younger stallion, was long gone. So, Lichen walked alone.

He knew exactly how to survive here: head low, body strong, think forward. It would have been much smarter to head *away* from the wind and snow, but the grey horse had gotten word that a lone mare was staying just a few miles away, over the ridge in the distance. If he could just get to her... maybe he wouldn't be alone anymore.
