“Hey, Dee! Wait up a sec!”
Gideon ignores the little curio trotting across the sand towards him, although his setting jaw and stiffening posture makes it evident that Cain has not gone unnoticed. He makes hurried work of closing up the linny’s last buckle and lowers his head, as if by pointedly refusing Cain his attention he might shoo him away – but after so many weeks struggling to avoid his half-sibling, he knows by now that hope is in vain.
As anticipated, Cain doesn’t take a hint. Refuses to, in fact. He slows down as he gets close, cheerful as ever, albeit somewhat breathless from his rush to catch Gideon in time. “Man! I forgot how much it sucks to run in sand.”
“What do you want, Cain.” It’s not so much a question he wants answered as an exasperated sigh through his teeth.
“What do you think, doofus? We’re going to Seajewel!”
Gideon finally turns around to address his brother with narrowed eyes. Cain’s got his meager possessions packed up and ready to go, annoying little purse hiveglider included. Gideon’s tail sways irritably, and his metal bead nearly collides with the curious bladefriend wandering over to greet Cain. He holds out a hand to grab Noir by the head and stop it from going closer. “No, we aren’t,” he says, holding the bladefriend in place as it obliviously attempts to keep walking. “You’re staying here.”
“What, you gonna tell me I can’t get on someone else’s boat?”
“I’m not taking you.”
Cain’s lip juts out in a little pout. He leans on one foot, seeming to consider Gideon’s words for a moment. But rather than get upset, he gets that look, that familiar twinkle of mischief in his eye that already makes Gideon’s blood boil before he even opens his mouth. “Oh, okay,” Cain says, shifting to the other foot with perked ears. “I guess I’ll have to go get Wade to give me a ride to the boat. I’ll have to tell him that you wouldn’t let me fly over with you, though… It might make him upset…”
Gideon’s hands clench at his sides. It’s been frustrating enough to deal with Cain hanging around here, never mind how hard Wade seems to take it that the estranged siblings don’t get along. Try as Gideon might to play the role of a hardass, he does not want to depart with the undyre distressed knowing that he stranded Cain here. Headache imminent, Gideon rubs the bridge of his nose and tries to take a calming breath.
“You don’t have boat fare.”
“Yeah I do! Wade gave me some.”
“Where are you going to stay?”
“With Pierce.”
Gideon runs his hand down his face. Noir looks up at him, then mimics the action with one of its limbs. The curio stews for a moment in silence, contemplating his options, trying to find some way to get out of this that won’t make more problems than there already are. Ultimately, though, he finds none. He hangs his head and exhales through his nose, which Cain eagerly takes as a victory and walks over with a pep in his step.
“Thanks, Dee! So…” He looks up at the massive, preening linny warily, then grins at Gideon. “How do you get on this thing?”
Gideon picks up Noir and lifts it up to help the bladefriend reach the saddle. He only spares Cain a glance from the corner of his eyes while doing so, mouth set in a hard frown.
“Figure it out.”
