Description The Rescue

The sound of a hundred weak bones
Clambering out of the trailer
You wish you had not looked
But it is too late

His eyes are sad
His hair long and bedraggled
His tail trailing behind him
Like a matted cloak

Every rib so sickeningly visible
His eye sockets sunk in
His legs like a toothpicks
Like he’s knocking on Death’s miserable door

You wonder how someone could to this
How someone could be so cruel
So ignorant and lazy
So lowly and pathetic
They claimed to have loved this animal?
That they tried to make him better?

What happened to his majesty?
What happened to the horse you read of in fairytales?
What happened to the sleek and valiant animals you saw in the movies?
What happened to the humane existence between man and horse?
For this disheartened creature has not been treated with love or kindness
He has not felt bathing water on his back, nor abundant food run down his throat
Nor a kiss on his muzzle, nor loving arms around his neck

You wonder, was he once loved?
Did somebody ever care for him?
How can one treated with such horrors ever forgive?
How can he be kind after so much unkindness?

These questions linger, until you hold out your hand
Until he sniffs the food, and eats it gratefully
Until you rest your hand upon his velvety muzzle
Until you put your quivering lips on his forehead

Then you know that he’ll forgive
You know that what he received in hate he will return in love
You know he will be better, and he will look like those in fairytales and movies
For the rescued horse does not hold petty grudges, or everlasting hate
He knows that here is a new beginning, a new life

You begin to realize the hatred each human being has towards one another
How much we hurt, and how much we hurt others
You think of those that you admire, and you add this horse to your list
For none is more loving, more grateful, and more miraculous than the rescued horse
