Description
Here goes my first attempt to do a Gif animation. I need to say that animation is quite difficult as well consuming.The frames are insufficient to produce decent movements. Well,sorry about that, that's all I could produce for now.
It's been a busy week and there are still many works to be done(for my part-time job). So, I may be less productive for a while.

This is Really cutie!! I like the animation aesthetic animation style you did this in even if its a low frame count. If this were done in Flash instead of PS and you used objects it and some tweening to add a few more inbetween frames it would look really good because I for one like this particular choppy animation style if not so choppy.

For your first attempt, I'd say it's pretty darn good! Unless you've taken classes or studied animation properly, the trouble-spots you laid out in your description do happen. I've done a number of animated gifs, a good amount in my DA gallery, but I have no training in animation. I still make mistakes like having to add more frames. 
As I look at the gif, it seems like it's a little slow, so maybe it would look a bit more fluid if you sped up the frames a small bit? I don't know what you've tried with it, but timing is always important. Definitely play around with whatever program(s) you are using, imho that's the best way to learn. Experiment and have fun with it.
Mind if I ask what program(s) you used for this piece? I'm looking to update my ancient programs for something more current, and with hopefully a simple user interface.
Oh and as for the pic itself? VERY sweet. Good lines and coloring.

I used Photoshop CS5 to make it. It contain 19 frames with the speed of changing each frame per 0.5 seconds. I did try to speed it up a bit. However, I think as slow as 0.5 is better to construct the mood and the atmosphere. The problem is that I need more frames to produce decent movements. I think I'll try to add more frames in my free time.

Ah. I use GIMP to actually animate,because Im a cheapo, but for the drawing, I use SAI . If you make frames with layers, then I suggest setting the layer opacity of your first layer(with the finished frame) to about 40%, then your 2nd layer (that you are going to make the 2nd frame on) to about 60%. then set your first layer to 0%, your 2nd to 40% and your 3rd to 60%, etc etc.
This way you get a clean idea of where your lines were and will be, so you can give one smooth swish with a slightly different angle, and have a smoother animation!
Have fun animating! though it is tedious and hard
